"Disconnected for Sleep Mode" message spam reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason1923 · 2021-11-28 10:21 Hi, I'm very new to IRC and I'm mainly using it to keep up with development of some open source projects. I'm using Textual and when I put my computer to sleep, I get this message sent to the chat: https://imgur.com/a/3VvZNpR. Does this get sent to everyone on the server? If so, is this unusual or annoying? I don't see it from the other ~30 members on the server so I'm not sure if there's some way to disable this or some method to persistently connect to IRC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- htepO · 2021-11-28 10:41 The quit message will be seen by anyone in the same channels you are in. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gods_of_Sourdough · 2021-11-28 11:36 [https://help.codeux.com/textual/Frequently-Asked-Questions.kb#f=faq- entry-3-7](https://help.codeux.com/textual/Frequently-Asked- Questions.kb#f=faq-entry-3-7) >Textual disconnects you with the reason “Disconnect for Sleep Mode” when your Mac is preparing to enter “sleep mode.” > >The Internet is turned off when your Mac is in sleep mode which means Textual has no way to keep you connected. > >If you are not worried about how long your battery will last throughout the day, then you can install Caffeine. > >Caffeine will tell your Mac that you want it to stay awake while Textual is connected. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason1923 · 2021-11-28 12:14 Thanks! Is this bad etiquette though? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- msawaie · 2021-11-28 12:18 try to use a bouncer like ZNC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2021-11-28 12:44 It depends how often you do it. Two-three times a day is fine. I have noticed some mac clients (I don't remember if it's textual) reconnect every hour because some macbooks wake up from sleep automatically then go back to sleep; that can be kind of annoying. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason1923 · 2021-11-28 12:45 Yeah I don't have that "power nap" feature enabled, but I do tend to put my laptop to sleep often. I'll definitely look into ZNC as someone else mentioned below. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason1923 · 2021-11-28 12:45 Thanks! This seems like the solution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- msawaie · 2021-11-28 12:49 make sure you install ZNC on a separate machine though, maybe a raspberry pi or you could host it on google compute engine for free, otherwise it won’t make a difference. good luck. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- schwiftshop · 2021-11-28 14:49 > is it bad etiquette though? Its easy enough for someone to tell their client to filter out messages like this if it becomes bothersome - anyway, you're on the right track with VNC, you'll have a way better overall experience, but don't worry about quit messages.
