Classic mIRC help reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dagamenerd · 2021-11-09 19:55 I've never used IRC before and I'm trying to use an old copy of mIRC but I cannot connect to active servers. Is it possible to do this and I'm just dumb or should I give up and use a more modern client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- uhp787 · 2021-11-09 20:54 i just connected to efnet with v6.16 just use random server option and make sure windows isnt blocking you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- girraween · 2021-11-10 00:10 Why use an old version? There are security issues etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- uhp787 · 2021-11-10 02:07 i dont use it anymore, it is in my archive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skizzerz1 · 2021-11-10 14:38 Old versions of mIRC will have difficulty connecting to various networks securely (via SSL) due to outdated certificate stores. You’re better off either updating mIRC to the latest version or using a different client rather than trying to make something old and unmaintained work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dagamenerd · 2021-11-10 14:41 Is there any irc clients with a retro vibe that are good ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skizzerz1 · 2021-11-10 14:53 Depends on what you mean by “retro” — the UI of most clients hasn’t meaningfully changed in ages and look pretty much how they did a decade or two ago. HexChat is a popular GUI client if you’d rather move away from mIRC. CLI options include WeeChat and irssi (although neither run natively on Windows, so you’d need WSL or a server to connect to) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Synx · 2021-11-12 02:22 What version are you trying to use? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- memphisgrit · 2021-12-29 03:38 That's what I'm saying... It's mostly cosmetically stayed the same.
