What's the difference between ban and quiet in ChanServ? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RadoslavL · 2021-11-04 14:25 EsperNet presents the popular ChanServ bot, but there are two options - quiet and ban. They do the exact same thing - make users affected by them not able to chat. The real ban is called an akick. So what's the real difference between ban and quiet? Can anyone tell me? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeedAGoodUsername · 2021-11-04 15:07 If using Atheme, * Quiet prevents the effected user(s) from talking in the channel, but they can still join it. * Ban prevents the effected user(s) from joining the channel, but doesn't remove them if they are already in the channel. * Akick does the same as a ban, but also removes them from the channel too if they are in it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RadoslavL · 2021-11-04 15:28 That is not true for EsperNet. Ban does allow you to join the channel, but doesn't allow you to chat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeedAGoodUsername · 2021-11-04 16:00 But that's literally what it does. I made an account on there just now to test it. (to ChanServ) ban ##foobartesting foobar*!*@* (in the channel) ChanServ sets mode +b foobar*!*@* (on another account, running /join ##foobartesting) ##foobartesting: Cannot join channel (+b) - you are banned (banned_from_channel) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2021-11-04 23:11 The only way to join a channel when a ban matches you is if you are on the exempt list. To view the exempt list, enter this while op: > /mode #channel +e ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2021-11-04 23:13 EsperNet uses Atheme and charbydis ircd. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thischildslife · 2021-11-05 00:42 The difference between the two allows you to use discretion and varying degrees of escalation in the moderation of your channel. A quiet is less heavy-handed than a kick or a ban. Kicking a user is a strong warning. A ban is like being thrown out of a pub for being drunk & disorderly and not allowed back in. A Quiet lets the user remain in the channel to see the discussion, but they cannot participate until the quiet is removed. Some moderators use this as a way to 'put user in a corner', and let them cool down a bit. I think of this as: "Shenanigans by the likes of hooligans and ruffians will not be tolerated in this establishment." A kick will eject the user from the channel I think of this as: "Go home Barney, you're drunk." A Ban or an Akick (auto-kick) will eject the user from the channel and prevent them from joining again until the ban/akick is removed. I think of this as: "GET OUT, Barney! And don't show your face around here again!" I know of some channels where a bot sets an incremental ban when commanded by a channel op, a disruptive user is quieted for a varying amount of time. If they continue to disrupt when the quiet expires, then they get a ban. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RadoslavL · 2021-11-05 17:36 I just wanna know something. Is Barney ok? Or did you kick him so much? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thischildslife · 2021-11-06 00:22 I <3 Barney. AND YOU!
