How do i use vpn on irc? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ClassifiedUFO · 2021-10-19 10:39 I want to stay anonymous on irc, but how do I do that? I am a beginner and don’t know that much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mccobsta · 2021-10-19 11:48 Conect vpn first then conect to Irc or use tor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wwwnukept · 2021-10-19 11:48 exactly like u use it elsewhere, if u are connected to the vpn it will show your vpn ip on the irc and not yours ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ipsirc · 2021-10-19 11:56 `# route add host.of.irc.server gw gateway.of.vpn` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Final_Savings · 2021-10-19 12:26 First tip: don’t worry about it. Unless you’re some celebrity that many people would know about and use a nickname that alludes to that you won’t stand out in a field of other people. So pick a username you don’t use anywhere else. As for using a vpn, many clients like hexchat or textual can handle proxies in-app, for https or socks proxies. You could also start a vpn on your computer like you would to route all traffic, and use the client like that. You can also use a web client like kiwiirc which would have the IP address of the web server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ClassifiedUFO · 2021-10-19 12:53 Thank you all for your good suggestions :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hemingray · 2021-10-19 16:16 That depends on the network you are trying to access. Many of the big ones block proxies/TOR/VPN use due to abuse, and even if you can get on, some channels may immediately ban you. YMMV. Another issue you can run into here, is being required to enable IDENTD, which obviously, you can't on a VPN. (This is done to verify that the IP you're coming in on is legitimately yours and not a proxy) KiwiIRC/Mibbit is only marginally better, as your IP is encoded in hex in the ident, and sometimes in the /whois info. (And again, some channels/networks will outright ban these users). Again, YMMV. Some small nets/servers may not care too much, if at all about a VPN user. (I know of a few on Undernet that ban by the ASN of the user's IP, including #undernet itself.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GL513 · 2021-10-19 18:51 Don't use a VPN if you use for, it actually harms tors environment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- james_hamilton1234 · 2021-10-19 19:10 You could consider using IRC Cloud, as far as I know you connect to them and they connect to whatever servers you are logged into ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dudreddit · 2021-10-19 20:08 I'll ask the question ... Do you even need a VPN while using USENET? I've been using it for over 15 years and never felt the need to use a VPN. Why? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bob_newhart · 2021-10-19 21:45 You can use irc over tor!? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gabmiral · 2021-10-20 05:06 you shouldn't. it breaks any security Tor gives ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2021-10-20 18:02 How so? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gabmiral · 2021-10-20 18:06 If you use vpn and tor as Your network -> VPN -> Tor -> The web, then the VPN is useless as all data is encrypted by Tor and the 1st node can't read what you're sending. If you want to hide the fact you use Tor, use bridges. If you're using your VPN and tor as Your network -> Tor -> VPN -> The web, then your VPN can read every data you're transiting (as data is decoded at the 3rd node) and it makes Tor useless. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2021-10-20 18:22 Oh, sure. I thought you meant IRC itself broke Tor security. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gabmiral · 2021-10-20 18:52 The fault's on me, i thought the comment I answered to said "you can use a VPN on tor ?" while it actually said "you can use IRC on tor ?" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hemingray · 2021-10-28 12:58 KiwiIRC/Mibbit/etc won't really keep you anonymous for a couple of reasons: A: Your IP address is encoded in HEX format and inserted into the ident displayed in /whois. This is not hard to decode, and decoders do exist online. Some also put your IP/Hostname into the name field in your /whois info. B: Some IRC nets decode the hex encoded IP, Try to resolve it as normal and spoof this into your /whois info, basically making it the exact same as if you just connected directly to IRC. Best way to do this is to either use something such as IRCcloud, or set up your own bouncer (ZNC, etc) on a cheap VPS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Final_Savings · 2021-10-29 01:36 You’re right. Just yesterday I noticed when I logged into my server with kiwiirc to do some testing my ip showed up when I ran whois, I think it was the “real name” section? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hemingray · 2021-10-29 08:35 Correct.
