Network Suggestions for my IRC channel reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fierra2005 路 2021-10-05 01:38 Recently, I've been thinking. What if I made my own IRC channel? But which network should I choose? Leave suggestions in the replies. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pandakekok9 路 2021-10-05 01:58 What is your channel about? Are you more comfortable with IRC services like ChanServ and NickServ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fierra2005 路 2021-10-05 03:02 Just a channel to hang out in, probably talk about some of your retro hardware, some games, probably an all-around-type of channel.I'm comfortable with NickServ, but haven't used ChanServ. I would also want to relay the same channel on another network, so that people from one network could chat with another person from another network for instance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- killerj666 路 2021-10-05 03:17 Come to Undernet 馃槉 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fierra2005 路 2021-10-05 05:28 I would, but if it weren't for the unnecessarily long cooldown time for registering channels. I'll pass. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nubatpython 路 2021-10-05 06:05 There's a piece of software called matterbirdge that can bridge (basically relay messages) channels between dirrerent irc networks and even to other platforms. If you're just trying to bridge two irc channels it might be overkill but if you use matterbirdge you could add new bridges to other platforms easily. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- killerj666 路 2021-10-05 07:58 I see. I personally don鈥檛 use Cservice for my channels. I can lend you eggdrops to hold ops if you鈥檙e up for it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DasBrain 路 2021-10-05 14:05 The usual advice is: go where your target audience is (and where your channel topic is permitted - some topics are not welcome on some networks, read the AUP first). If your target audience doesn't use IRC yet, you have much more free choice - and then think about what you expect from the network, how well on-boarding works and so on. For example: * Does the network provide support in the native language of your channel? * Do you expect people to register with services? How much of a hassle is that? Is SASL for automatic login supported? * What do you expect from the services? Just some automatic op/authentication? Nickname protection? * Should the network provide hostname cloaks/spoofs? By default? There are many networks with **very** different philosophies and target audiences out there. There is no perfect network for any and all purposes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] 路 2021-10-05 14:29 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wwwnukept 路 2021-10-05 15:02 libera it's cool ---------------------------------------------------------------------- killerj666 路 2021-10-05 15:11 Ok nerd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] 路 2021-10-05 15:12 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deathstar107 路 2021-10-05 15:31 Libera seems like a good suggestion ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] 路 2021-10-05 17:05 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Revolutionary_Cydia 路 2021-10-05 17:26 Efnet, 2600 and OFTC. Also the irc2P network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gozarc 路 2021-10-05 18:44 Check out [Ergo](https://ergo.chat/). After Freenode I followed one of the channels to Ergo and found a pretty nice set of features, especially for non-IRC people (built in history and some bouncer faculty). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rans0m 路 2021-10-05 18:50 Undernet, efnet are a few where I hang. If you do not have your own bot to watch your channel, make sure you pick a network where you can register it. They then provide a channel bot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] 路 2021-10-05 21:44 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- l0c0dantes 路 2021-10-05 22:05 I mean, really whatever network your on doesn't really matter if those are your interests, most people into IRC would fit the bill for those sorts of things at least a little bit. Maybe quake net? They're old and pretty big. Almost be easier to figure out what sort of people you would want based upon which communities you already hang around with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pandakekok9 路 2021-10-06 08:44 Yeah, it has full support for Matrix bridging, which I then use for bridging Discord to IRC. Works well so far. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde 路 2021-10-09 02:59 If your looking for a large network to be on libera is probably the choice at this point. If not looking for a large network then I'd personally recommend one called [tilde.chat](https://tilde.chat). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] 路 2021-10-31 11:43 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Arktis_Wolf 路 2021-12-18 21:02 Are you still using irc @dasbrain ?
