I'm way out of the loop - What replaced freenode? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Whatafeeling2013 · 2021-09-30 04:43 I was a newb to IRC chats a year ago when I started using them, and I only used freenode for about a month before everyone got all angry about some big debacle. Apparently it was sold to some awful corporation. Or something. I'm using Hexchat, and I noticed that now it just tries to connect to freenode forever, but it never can. It just says "Remote host closed socket" and starts all over. I had heard that Libera (but I only show Libra) chat came along to sort of replace freenode, and I'm wondering if that's where everyone flocked to when they abandoned freenode. We have two sites here, which one is legit? Or is there some other popular IRC chat that will have many of the old chatrooms that used to be on freenode? Any help would be greatly appreciated! [https://libera.chat/guides/registration](https://libera.chat/guides/r egistration) [https://librairc.net/faq/](https://librairc.net/faq/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pandakekok9 · 2021-09-30 05:04 Libera.Chat is where people from freenode flocked to. LibraIRC is unrelated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YourBobsUncle · 2021-09-30 05:20 Libera.chat is the real website. Your client can't connect to Freenode anymore because they purged the whole thing and started off in a clean slate for no reason. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-09-30 05:41 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wyclif · 2021-09-30 09:15 Somebody trying to pass himself off as the "Crown Prince of Korea" got control of Freenode without the participation of the vast majority of the long-time staff. One of the staffers apparently sold him the rights to Freenode (this is hotly disputed by former Freenode, now Libera staff). He then started purging a lot of the channels. [Libera.chat](https://Libera.chat) is good, and I've moved over there because all the channels I frequent moved there too. The staff are dedicated and deserve a lot of credit for doing the hard work of transferring so many channels. The only problem I've found with it is that now I keep getting banned from some channels because of reconnecting too many times, I'm on a spotty connection because of typhoon season in SE Asia. When I try to use a VPN, I can't even connect because Libera is so new that they block big ranges of IPs, including the one my VPN uses. It might be good to use a VPS for your IRC needs now. If anyone has worked out a solution to that, I'd like to hear recommendations (I use irssi with a handful of scripts). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- b0ing · 2021-09-30 15:21 Could you use ZNC? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SkyMarshal · 2021-09-30 16:13 The main ones now seem to be https://libera.chat/, https://www.oftc.net/, and https://snoonet.org/. Most of Freenode went to Libera, and there are a bunch of open source projects on OFTC, and this Reddit’s IRC is on Snoonet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Whatafeeling2013 · 2021-09-30 16:22 Wow that sounds like an excellent business model lol. Acquire popular thing - Purge of all users. Any idea what their line of thinking was? Or was it just that the "right people" somewhere didn't like the fact that it existed? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YourBobsUncle · 2021-09-30 16:29 This was all the idea of one jackass so idk. He removed all the users and all the channels. Its a new server. So everyone left now because you can't trust what is an official project or a real user in the community anymore. He wanted to recreate it to some sort of "free speech" thing even though the intentions of freenode was to be a place for open source communities to have a space to talk and ask questions. The dude is an "apolitical" Trump moron you can probably find this one interview that shows he has not much of a brain to begin with lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Whatafeeling2013 · 2021-09-30 16:36 Are you familiar with how do add libera to a desktop client? I'm using hexchat, which has a place to add a new server. I tried adding irc.libera.chat:6697 (TLS) but apparently that doesn't work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SkyMarshal · 2021-09-30 16:38 I’m not familiar with hexchat, but did you try different variations? irc.libera.chat irc://irc.libera.chat irc://irc.libera.chat:6697 Sometimes they’re just finicky about format. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Whatafeeling2013 · 2021-09-30 17:03 I got all the information entered correctly, but for some reason it won't let me connect. It just keeps saying "Connection reset by peer". But apparently it did find the right server: Lua version 1.3/5.4 loaded. Try connecting using a different app and see if you can get in, to check whether it’s a general problem or one specific to hexchat. https://web.libera.chat/ https://weechat.org/ https://irssi.org/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Whatafeeling2013 · 2021-09-30 17:14 Do you happen to know if you have to be logged in first, before you can actually connect to Libera? With freenode, you'd message nickserv and login. But you got connected to freenode first. I'm getting this error when I try to get into Libera: Lua version 1.3/5.4 loaded. Just wondering if there's a solution to this that doesn't involve VPS. By the way, this is the reason people move to Discord. It just works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Whatafeeling2013 · 2021-09-30 23:38 Is that typically a field all it's own? Or would it be after the server name/address? For example you have to put in "irc.libera.chat/6697" but maybe you need "/TLS" after the 6697? I'm pretty new to all this so I'm having to sort of figure it out as I go. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2021-10-01 01:09 It depends on the client ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-10-03 12:20 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skizzerz1 · 2021-10-03 18:30 Did you ever get this working?
