Best IRC client in 2021? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cww2010 · 2021-09-06 23:25 Hi. I am looking for an IRC client. What should I use? I have heard about Freenode, Hexchat and Quassel IRC. I don't know what to use, though. I assume Reddit is my best bet. EDIT: I currently have HexChat set up, but I'll leave this here for replies for future reference for others and for myself. Also, I dualboot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.04, feel free to drop replies for either! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ManiaGamine · 2021-09-06 23:58 I primarily use weechat and when I want old windows nostalgia I use adiirc despite having paid for mIRC years ago. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DaftPump · 2021-09-07 00:05 Mention of your OS will yield better replies, I think. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pedrolucasp · 2021-09-07 00:32 Weechat or irssi is the way to go. If you want something more richer, maybe IRCcloud or Kiwi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Treyzania · 2021-09-07 01:14 Don't connect to Freenode anymore, use libera.chat. I use Hexchat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cww2010 · 2021-09-07 01:16 I'm currently using HexChat now, but I'll look into those! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cww2010 · 2021-09-07 01:16 Added! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cww2010 · 2021-09-07 01:17 I decided on HexChat for now, but I will look into those later, for sure! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cww2010 · 2021-09-07 02:01 I set [libera.chat](https://libera.chat) as a connection on my Hexchat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-09-07 03:07 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2021-09-07 03:08 weechat and irssi are terminal-based, so stick with hexhcat unless you use a terminal a lot already. weechat is better than irssi in the same way that tmux is better than screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ironmoosen · 2021-09-07 04:02 I'm not a hardcore user but I like Quassel for it's theming capabilities. I've also used Hexchat and I like it's simplicity and Mirc for when I want to watch several channels at once. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fleg · 2021-09-07 05:00 The best thing about Quassel is that you can run core on a separate computer - like a RaspberryPI or a VPS - and connect to that instead of connecting directly to the server. It's like using a bouncer, but deeply integrated with the client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-09-07 06:15 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scrutinizer80 · 2021-09-07 06:39 irssi or hexchat on *nix adiirc on Windows. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lazyfingersy · 2021-09-07 08:18 Weechat bro. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IBNash · 2021-09-07 09:32 In 2021 it is Weechat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lukaso666 · 2021-09-07 11:41 weechat ofkorzzz, configured via /iset... https://postimg.cc/D4msnLjx ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dim13 · 2021-09-07 11:50 I pretty like [LimeChat](http://limechat.net/mac/) -- nice and minimal (Mac only) and old good [irssi](https://irssi.org/). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djDef80 · 2021-09-07 12:28 mIRC for Windows has been around a long time and is frequently patched and updated. irssi for Linux is my go-to, although weechat is on my radar. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zeklyn_ · 2021-09-07 12:52 I recommend HexChat with a dark theme :^) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- carbolymer · 2021-09-07 15:11 +1 For quassel. Working scrollback, synchronized with android application. Best UX of all clients I've used. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mendacity531 · 2021-09-07 15:36 These sorts of questions lead to the best arguments. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- danievdm · 2021-09-07 19:47 I love Quassel as a bouncer as I move between my desktop and other devices. Only problem on iOS is no push notifications by default, but I like that there is consistency in functionality and history across devices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- girraween · 2021-09-07 21:31 mIRC will always be the program I use. Have been using it since I was 13 or so. Even paid for it (big spender over here). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paffeu · 2021-09-07 22:34 Weechat or Quassel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-09-07 22:50 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-09-08 00:23 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jan- · 2021-09-09 06:37 I'm on windows but this client is multi-platform. KVirc's **split-view** feature is the reason I moved from mirc. KVIrc 5.0.1 'Aria' this build has been stable for me so far: Build date: 2020-03-30 11:43:45 UTC Sources date: 20200330 Revision number: 5.0.0-74-gfdbb10765 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ariathriven · 2021-09-09 12:00 Catgirl from Causal Agency ---------------------------------------------------------------------- therealgadfly · 2021-09-10 01:24 upvote for both hexchat and [libera.chat](https://libera.chat) . Just hope too many people are not turned off by having to set up SASL , but seeing as its tech oriented I guess its not a big deal ---------------------------------------------------------------------- buovjaga · 2021-09-10 07:27 If you want to have a total geek out, you could review the actively- developed clients I mention in my [IRC tech news articles](https://www.ilmarilauhakangas.fi/categories/irc/). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 10leej · 2021-09-11 18:53 I e used herlxchat for as long as ai can remember. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cww2010 · 2021-09-11 21:14 Haha, indeed they do! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dorovich · 2021-09-18 16:57 weechat gang, assemble! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- syx8op · 2021-09-26 06:59 I'm old school, mirc + Invision 2.0 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rro99 · 2021-09-30 05:23 Oh this is neat. Keep it up! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ninjalie · 2021-10-03 20:43 probably weechat but i still use irssi. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Qllervo · 2021-10-07 09:59 My choice is irssiproxy + thelounge. It's fantastic and supports for example link previews, hilight popups, direct image uploads etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheBudda69 · 2021-11-07 06:59 You're not on your own lol I am 63 been on the net fkn years. Windows 1.1 lol I was a windows guy for many years, but then it turned into Winblows. I change years ago to being a Linux man. I use hexchat on Linux. I got a VM for Winblows and if I do use it, I use mirc + Invision 2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arca5 · 2021-12-08 02:00 I think it's funny that Windows 11 looks like some Linux distros I was running 15 years ago. I love Linux but for quality of life I'm still a Windows user. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- QuirkyImage · 2022-09-02 11:52 >iOS is no push notifications by default By default does that mean there is a way to get this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- danievdm · 2022-09-03 10:35 No, it means workarounds or 3rd party services like a bouncer service. It's an iOS issue though and not with IRC. Also iOS kills background apps so apps that need a constant background connection (in place of push notifications) are also a challenge. Ways around that can be having a widget that keeps an app active. But the dev's need to explore ways to help make push notifications work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TruthSeekerAddict · 2022-09-06 19:54 i really enjoyed using kvirc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JTadaki · 2023-08-11 19:33 Hey, I appreciate this. Just coming across your comment. Keep it up! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RageXca · 2023-09-04 23:11 Nice look and theme ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rmzy · 2023-09-12 17:16 Hello, i'd like to mention pidgin for others who are searching. Been using it for years now. I now have pidgin setup through docker and can connect to a webpage to get access to my irc chats wherever. From mobile or pc. Always have access. Pretty nice. Stay logged in 24/7 also because it runs on my server currently. So could run from vps even. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Fold8134 · 2023-12-19 23:25 MiRC is still the best UI for me personally. Hexchat is probably the best nowadays.
