Why do you still use irc? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- putku · 2021-08-26 07:06 People who use IRC, Why do you still use it? Why not telegram or discord or something else? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ConfusionAccurate · 2021-08-26 07:15 System resources.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AB49K · 2021-08-26 07:15 Because I'm not a furry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 007ace · 2021-08-26 07:50 DCC rooms. Chatting with people about current events. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- putku · 2021-08-26 10:00 Neither am I. What's your point? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- putku · 2021-08-26 10:02 DCC? Need to google it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- putku · 2021-08-26 10:02 Fair enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- benjy500c · 2021-08-26 10:18 I'm on IRC chatting with people who don't want to switch to Discord. They don't change because of the privacy policy. If you want you can come to our server : [irc.evilcorp.ga](https://irc.evilcorp.ga) We have a bridge btw discord and IRC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- McDutchie · 2021-08-26 10:50 Telegram wants my phone number before I can even begin using it. How about no. Discord is massive commercial centralised bloat, yet still lacks basic features like moderating a channel and voicing/unvoicing arbitrary users in it. IRC is lean and efficient, and it's where the clueful users hang out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- StormJourney · 2021-08-26 16:25 I've been on IRC for over 20 years now and was most active in one of the book channels. Most of the ops and a lot of the members from back in the day are still in that same channel. We've known each other such a long time now, it's like a small and close family. I do use discord for a lot of other social stuff - mostly gaming or voice chats, etc. - but I think IRC and the people I've known on there for so long will always be my home at heart. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ExBritNStuff · 2021-08-26 16:41 https://xkcd.com/1782/ (because it’s true) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mendacity531 · 2021-08-26 17:13 First, I don't have to sign up for IRC as you do with telegram, discourse, et al. Second, IRC is light-weight on resources, it isn't a memory pig. Third, it's a trip down memory lane. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mendacity531 · 2021-08-26 17:13 Love the ebooks channel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YourBobsUncle · 2021-08-26 17:18 It allows direct downloading between two users. It doesn't connect to the IRC server for this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CatfaceMcMeowMeow · 2021-08-26 17:34 I started running a small IRC server for a specific group ten years ago because I didn't wanna deal with large network drama. Turns out that was a pretty solid bet! I personally also use more modern things like Discord, but about half my users don't want all their data going through some big corporate entity. Some of them also use weird operating systems and browsers that won't support Discord. IRC just winds up being a minimum viable platform for everyone. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- panickedthumb · 2021-08-26 18:05 I know a handful of people on IRC who *are* furries so I’m not sure your point holds. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- silverfang789 · 2021-08-26 18:11 Because there's just something of the wild west about IRC that isn't in these newer chat clients. IRC predated the Web and just has such a retro vibe to it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ToasterBotnet · 2021-08-26 19:43 * mostly DCC * the client can run in a tmux session. * It just does text. No bloat. * There are a lot of open-source specific channels * You can ask questions about Linux * It can run on a server in the background * It's retro * It's cool * I don't like change ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Aethysius · 2021-08-26 19:54 Because there are people there who I like to chat with who aren't on Discord or the like. Also nostalgia. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dezimodnar · 2021-08-26 20:37 Its sort of a 'everyone goes to this bar because everyone else goes to this bar' thing. The good communities are on irc, period. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rans0m · 2021-08-26 21:35 My main reason is I do not want anyone storing my text or my files in a readable format. I encrypt any channels that I want to be secure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-08-26 22:31 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oinkbar · 2021-08-26 22:53 its simple ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2021-08-26 23:55 I've spent over 25 years in some of my IRC channels, chatting to the same people almost every day. Some new people have come, some old people have gone, some people have sadly passed away and we've held memorials for them. But the community is still there and I've known these people for over half of my life. People whom I met through IRC are attending my wedding. Sure some of those communities moved to different mediums, and a couple have even split and reformed in different places over the years, but most have stayed here or ended up back here again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- badjano · 2021-08-27 00:23 Fantastic! How does that happen? Tunneling? I’m intrigued ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mbar3456 · 2021-08-27 01:10 A) I always have. B) The people I talk to are still there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmalteseknight · 2021-08-27 01:14 I am a light user but basically it is an open protocol that is not beholden to anyone. Recently the Freenode server which was popular server pooped the bed and people simply moved to another server. It was a mere inconvenience for most users. But if Discord or Telegram poop the bed, you have to lose everything tied to them and you have the hassle of finding a new service and learn about all it's quirks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hopingforabetterpast · 2021-08-27 01:59 DCC is a p2p protocol. both users share IPs and establish a direct connection so they can share files or chat privately over a potentially more secure network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- putku · 2021-08-27 05:06 Oh thats cool. I did not know it was possible. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-08-27 05:08 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mccobsta · 2021-08-27 06:42 Loads of different ways of using it and it's so damn light discord is sluggish even on higher end hardware for me Irc dosent even have a footprint ---------------------------------------------------------------------- benjy500c · 2021-08-27 08:49 You can do lot of things with bash and python, if you come to the server you can ask the source code to the user zero. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- badjano · 2021-08-28 00:15 What If the ip is not exposed? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hopingforabetterpast · 2021-08-28 08:28 I'm not sure I understand your question. What if the IP is not exposed? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- badjano · 2021-08-28 18:44 oh... in the 90s we didn´t have home routers, so the computer was basically connected directly to the internet, and the IP in that case was the computer´s ip, so if any port was open it would connect directly to that computer. Nowadays the router is the one with the IP exposed, so if anyone tries to connect to that IP it would connect with the router, and routers hardly ever have any port exposed unless you set it up manually, like a port forward to an internal IP ( any computer in the LAN ) so that people from outside can connect to it. Chances are that most of the computers today are behind a router, so we don´t have that kind of P2P anymore, so the only alternative we have is through tunneling, which is basically a socket that both computers connect to that redirects messages from one to another. But I will take a deeper look into this DCC, maybe it has some trick that I´m not aware of, but I´ve been digging through descentralized networking since I learned about bitcoin, and so far these are the only options we have to make direct connections AFAIK. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hopingforabetterpast · 2021-08-28 19:19 [NAT traversal.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAT_traversal) Most routers also expose uPnP for port forwarding and NAT. For most intents and purposes you can ignore the fact that p2p is being mediated by routers unless you don't trust your local network. Even if you don't, you can add encryption to your DCC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- badjano · 2021-08-28 22:38 Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Terriblarious · 2021-08-29 23:26 Only place i can go that doesn't have ads and isn't selling my info to a corporation (that i know of) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EspeciallyDuck · 2021-09-01 15:50 Discord wants my phone number before it will let me login. Tried using a VOIP number, but no... Absolutely not. Telegram also wants my phone number. Absolutely not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DavidRooboxALT · 2021-09-05 06:44 That apparently everyone on anything else is a furry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blebaford · 2021-09-05 18:08 I use it for free software discussion, but I also prefer it for anything else when possible. It's just so convenient once its set up on a VPS with screen, and logs are easy to backup and search. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- atr3dhead · 2021-09-19 13:13 I have been visiting there off and on for the past 18 years or so. I'm always excited to see it is still there, with a lot of the same names, every time I come back. Agreed that IRC is more "home" than any other "platform" out there now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-09-24 20:29 Everything else is NSA spyware funded by Antichrist controlled organizations ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AmazingSwindle · 2021-10-16 15:42 I can run my own server. I can control the logging policy of my own server. I can easily connect through TOR and/or a VPS. And I just plain like it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- redosej · 2022-02-11 12:18 a) It just works b) You meet and chat with "random people" as well and can meet new people that way c) I can use whatever client I want. On Discord I have to use discord's clients. d) No clutter, no notifications, nothing extra. Just text. Plain and simple. e) No same kind of censorship, no Facebook collecting all my communications etc., and if that ever happens I can launch my own IRC server if I am annoyed of QuakeNet, IRCNet or whatever net I use f) No need to give my phone number or any other personal info if I don't want. Also IRC usage does not mean that I do not use others; I use WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal on my computer as well, but I still wish people would go to IRC more.
