Advice on staying safe and secure on a hacker IRC reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techn0WeenieJr · 2021-08-05 15:26 I've heard a lot about IRCs over the years and I've also been wanting to start learning computer hacking skills and understanding more about cybersecurity in the process. I'm a little hesitant about security on these platforms and not getting hacked myself: are there any tips I can know for staying secure on an IRC? If IRCs aren't the way to go I'd be happy to learn some alternatives. NOTE: This is all in the effort of learning ethical white hat hacking and a future job in cyber security. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltReality · 2021-08-05 15:32 Hacking IRC channels are going to be full of nothing but script kiddies...look into real cyber-security training and leave the IRC channels for the kids. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-08-05 15:38 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techn0WeenieJr · 2021-08-05 15:38 Good to know... Are there any good places where I can discuss computer programming and hacking with other individuals? Also I do plan on looking into to cybersecurity training from a local tech college and transferring to the necessary place to further my education. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-08-05 15:40 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-08-05 15:40 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltReality · 2021-08-05 15:43 Programming is different, there are plenty of programming IRC channels that are just fine...I would check out [libera.chat](https://libera.chat) and see what all is around there. As far as discussing computer security specifically...I can't think of much...maybe there's a Security+ IRC channel or something but I am not really aware of anything. Maybe look into Reddit subs about the subject? but look for computer security or network security stuff...searching for "Hacking" is going to get you garbage results. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techn0WeenieJr · 2021-08-05 15:43 Fake hacker? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltReality · 2021-08-05 15:45 Who me? I never claimed to be a hacker lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techn0WeenieJr · 2021-08-05 15:46 Thank you for the advice. You probably just saved me a lot of trouble. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-08-05 15:46 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notrox · 2021-08-05 17:59 > why tf you answering questions about how to learn hacking /r/gatekeeping learning stuff ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2021-08-05 18:57 The usual safety tips apply: keep your software up to date, don't download software you don't trust, use strong unique passwords, 2FA when possible, don't disclose your postal address. IRC isn't more dangerous than emails or the web. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pillb0y · 2021-08-05 19:33 Look into a BNC… something to stop the kiddiez from packeting (DOS/DDOS) your connection… as I recall, there were lots of those sorts of games played on those sorts of servers… If I was angling that way, I’d maybe start on r/irc and see if you can get some recommendations for good channels… from what I observe (mainly from them discussing drama about freenode amd A.Lee), there seems to be some advanced users/ops that are there… and yeah, searching for network security is going to be way better than using hacking as a search term… unless you look up like TMRC hacking. if you wanna go old school… :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OneofLittleHarmony · 2021-08-05 20:31 Just use a proxy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- emge · 2021-08-05 22:38 There's a cyber security channel on matrix that's pretty active. https://matrix.to/#/!xBRJadUtxNCiIKdwZT:matrix.org?via=matrix.org&via= privacytools.io&via=tchncs.de ---------------------------------------------------------------------- evilyou · 2021-08-06 00:41 This is /r/irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnnasGrassHopper · 2021-08-06 08:57 IRC is not less secure than email, or web in general... It's just a way to chat. There quite a couple of IRC channels for programming/software dev/etc... there is probably a IRC channel for cyber security as well! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wRAR_ · 2021-08-06 09:44 Don't click links there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- f---_society · 2021-08-06 12:03 lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pillb0y · 2021-08-06 22:26 Seriously!
