No One Can See My Messages reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CocteauBoy · 2021-06-19 14:28 After many many years of using irc, suddenly, no one can see my messages. I’m connected to the network. I’ve changed networks. I’ve tried different approaches (through mIRC, Colloquy, Hex, and web based interface Kiwi, iOS, Mac, PC) and still nothing. I can see them. They can see I’m in the chat, but none of my messages can be seen. My Nick is registered. But even the password verification process is failed because the server can’t see my messages. At least one other of my community members has experienced the same. What could this be? Is it my ISP? My router? Thank you in advance for any help! UPDATE: I can't chat from ANY device in my household under any username, wired or wireless, but if I switch to my mobile device and turn off wifi, I can chat. So it seems very specific to my router or ISP? Is this a familiar situation? Troy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mill_en_ial · 2021-06-19 15:07 are you muted on these channels? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CocteauBoy · 2021-06-19 16:35 I’m the owner of the channels. I’m not muted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CocteauBoy · 2021-06-19 16:38 UPDATE: and suddenly now people can see my messages again. But I know this will change back again to where no one can see my messages and I know know what is deciding if I can be seen or not seen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mill_en_ial · 2021-06-19 16:50 they were trolling you. lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CocteauBoy · 2021-06-19 17:19 LoL no, it didn’t work even in chatting with myself logged in as a separate username on another device. It’s been happening off and on for about 6 months now. I can’t figure it out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trekkie1701c · 2021-06-19 17:23 If your friends aren't trolling, is it possible that your ircd has a global mute mode? Do any of your other friends have IRCOp status and could be interfering with services as a joke? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CocteauBoy · 2021-06-19 22:07 It’s not trolling or a joke. No one who uses it in my small community would even know how to do that. lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trekkie1701c · 2021-06-20 00:22 It could be packet loss, now that I think of it. IRC can be a really resilient protocol (I've somehow maintained a connection to the server despite physically unplugging networking hardware and power cycling it then plugging it back in), but sometimes if the system running the client is wonky or if the network is being weird you can lose messages. It's been really rare (the only time I can think of with dropped messages is when I had a ZNC run out of memory entirely due to another process I was running on the server). But if the only commonality is your ISP, maybe stuff's being lost before you get to the server? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CocteauBoy · 2021-06-22 13:27 When I speedtest, I have no packet loss. Here is the interesting thing... I can't chat from ANY device in my household under any username, wired or wireless, but if I switch to my mobile device and turn off wifi, I can chat. So it seems very specific to my router or ISP? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trekkie1701c · 2021-06-22 15:17 Pings usually send smaller packets whereas IRC messages can be several times larger (a ping packet is somewhere around 32-64 bytes depending on the OS sending the ping, whereas IRC is going to be somewhat larger; I can't find the largest packet size allowable although IRC messages themselves are limited to 512 bytes). If you were simply dropping all packets, then the IRC connection would just drop. If, however, there was something weird happen causing larger packets to be dropped, then you'd remain connected to the server, and you'd see your own messages (most of the time, there are a few clients that wait til the server gets the message to actually display the message you sent. The Lounge comes to mind), but the server wouldn't actually receive the message and nobody else would be able to see them. As for what's causing it, I'm not really sure. I've only experienced it once with a system that was on the verge of dying. If I were in your shoes I'd see if the router has any traffic/internet optimizations enabled, or any sort of filtering, etc, as these are the only things I can think of that might deprioritize/drop certain packets. You can also mess with the ping command for your operating system and instruct it to send larger packets and see if this theory is true at all (it's sort of an off the wall "this is all I can think of" but I'm not super convinced that it's certainly a drop of large packets, I'm just certain enough that I think it's worth mentioning for troubleshooting purposes). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CocteauBoy · 2021-06-24 13:08 Thank you for this suggestion. I found a test that allows me to test packet loss in various sizes from small to massive and I have zero packet loss. I don't know if that helps eliminate this concern, but I tested, just in case. Thank you for taking the time to reply. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CocteauBoy · 2021-06-25 16:44 I've had to scrap using IRC altogether now and just move on to a paid solution. I have no idea why I cannot stay connected to any IRC channels. I am being blocked somehow by my ISP or Router and I don't know what to do. It's totally random, too, so in the middle of a community event, or a private counseling session, no one can see my messages and I can't use any commands or credentials. I guess I'm giving up. I've used IRC for decades and never had this issue before so I don't know what else to do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MatanzaCueto · 2021-07-26 03:58 I had the same issue it was an old ssl lib in my case.
