IRC access at work reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- patchie2 · 2021-06-12 18:03 My company has restricted lots of stuff in the past year, also the access to IRC. We still have access to outgoing SSH, FTP, etc.. Is there any super cheap service where i can seem to be on online on IRC 24/7, and logon from home or work, when ever i get time and read through? It has to be super cheap, and fairly simple to setup. It can either be via an IRC client or web client, or similar. I also have an SSH linux server, so if there is an app i can install this with super simple setup, then that would also be an option maybe. I tried this 10 years ago, and i used far too much time setting up, for me to use on this. Thanks in advance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- e38383 · 2021-06-12 18:35 tmux and irssi or weechat. If you want a simple webservice take a look at IRCCloud. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Revolutionary_Cydia · 2021-06-12 19:19 Have you heard of a VPN? Just connect up and then connect to IRC, and or a proxy. Or just ssh to another box and irssi from there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- patchie2 · 2021-06-12 19:26 what about a online service, that keeps me online 24/7? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- e38383 · 2021-06-12 19:42 https://www.irccloud.com/ does exactly that. Or https://github.com/thelounge/thelounge for self hosting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- snowice0 · 2021-06-12 19:56 If you have a Linux box you can ssh onto just install tmux or screen and irssi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- snowice0 · 2021-06-12 19:57 Just use tmux or screen if it's your own Linux box with no downtime. I mean most people aren't turning off their servers when not in use ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dtv-fx · 2021-06-12 20:36 Definitely IRCcloud...used it for years...accessible from browser & apps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- basement_gamer · 2021-06-12 20:54 For $5/month you can get a VPS almost anywhere and install screen, tmux and weechat. I have a Linode server and I'm 24/7 on IRC. Alternatively, you can use IRC bridges with other chats, like with matrix.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- l0c0dantes · 2021-06-13 16:44 Seconding IRC cloud, runs a few bucks a month. Otherwise you can setup znc on your linux box ---------------------------------------------------------------------- patchie2 · 2021-06-13 20:47 Btw, i just found this free service for freenode server: https://freenode.net/news/taking-irc-further ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kunagi7 · 2021-06-13 21:53 You shouldn't use anything from Freenode since their network seems to be dwindling thanks to the bad decisions of their new owner. IrcCloud should work just fine or you can keep running an irssi client inside any server you own (like a Linode instance, your home computer or even a small raspberry pi hooked up to your home router) and connect to it via SSH. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- patchie2 · 2021-06-14 16:15 Yeah, i noticed. Who is the new owners? What is the best network for programming, if not freenode? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- b1tbuck37 · 2021-06-14 19:55 most of the FOSS projects, other communities and people that made freenode what it was have moved to libera.chat. I'd venture to guess that would be a good start. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kunagi7 · 2021-06-14 20:09 There's Libera chat where most of the former freenode active users are connected now and smaller communities like OFTC. There's a top 10 which shows the fast decline and also other IRC communities: https://netsplit.de/networks/top10.php ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iseethesharp · 2021-06-16 18:10 I use znc as a bouncer
