Andrew Lee being salty on Wikimedia for moving to Libera reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pandakekok9 · 2021-05-26 03:31 They also took over wikimedia channels like #wikimedia-commons and redirected them to a double hash: https://dpaste.com/2Y26TTQMD. They even took over the private -admin and -checkuser channels, which is just hilarious ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nicd · 2021-05-26 03:40 The Elixir channel #elixir-lang was also destroyed[0] for not following an unmentioned policy but there is no policy against mentioning Libera. There wasn't even a plan to move but to keep both channels but I guess Freenode wants to make it clear we're not welcome. [0] https://twitter.com/AmNicd/status/1397391240631619585 EDIT: The Elixir channel has moved to Libera.chat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-05-26 06:53 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IBNash · 2021-05-26 06:59 Clown. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2021-05-26 08:01 This wasn't the way. I was absolutely on the fence about this. I couldn't give less of a shit about who runs freeenode, nor could the channels I use. But now some of those, who weren't going anywhere, have been forcibly taken over for saying they also have a home over on the new network, and everyone being forcibly redirected to a double hash version, some of those channels weren't closed, weren't closing and have been open decades. That's unforgivable. All they've done is piss off those of us who weren't realistically going anywhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- balljointedmae · 2021-05-26 16:56 God these guys are crybabies. “Cancel culture” my ass they’re just using that as an inflammatory buzzword. I fucking hate that term because, regardless of political affiliation, it’s a term used to shut down disagreements (you don’t like and have valid reasons for it? CANCEL CULTURE.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trekkie1701c · 2021-05-26 21:25 Also I imagine if the former staff were able to grow Freenode into the world's largest IRC network (by far) then their views on how to run the network *probably* shouldn't be so easily dismissed. If I had a few billion dollars and wanted to have a large IRC network to my name (and hadn't shadily seized said network) they'd probably be people to look to for advice. If I owned said network already somehow I'd absolutely be doing everything I could to retain them. Not you know, belittled and ignored. Also, wasn't there a decentralization plan he kept going on about? But the only 'improvement' he can point to specifically is HostServ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thedaveCA · 2021-05-26 21:54 right? I was going to wait it out, mostly out of laziness in adding a new net work to my CNC and all the other clients I use. The stupid has forced my hand now, so here we go. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- immibis · 2021-05-27 01:30 Their *stated* explanation is that mentioning other networks is spam, and was therefore against policy all along and doesn't need a specific one. Yeah. Not gonna fly. (except with "debianuser" apparently) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iseethesharp · 2021-06-16 18:24 Freenode: Oppress cancel culture Also freenode: bans people for criticizing them
