Some old and almost forgotten clients remain very good since the protocol doesn't evolve much with the time (I use the venerable Epic client, which I would obviously not suggest to someone seeking for a general advice). You should browse a little and find some review comparing several clients. (You can easily find a review with more than 20 clients.) If you're on Windows, you'll be directed to the MS store, where they want you to pay for it. Just use the Free Trial option, which I think is the same as paid. Then if Hexchat doesn't do what you need it to do you can start putting a list together of what you don't like and matching it up with other clients which do what you need. The number one question is whether you want a full GUI client for a desktop or a console-based one. Hexchat is the former.
