Remove my IP from showing with username reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ithrowpicks · 2021-04-07 16:47 I noticed when I connect to freenode and GIMPNet that in any channel I join, when I right click on my name it shows @IPv6 Address I don't see that on anyone else's name, is it because I am looking at my name or does everyone in the channel see it? Is there a way to prevent it? Is it safer to use a Bouncer or VPN when connecting? Should I use both at the same time? I am using flatpak Hexchat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- idontakeacid · 2021-04-07 17:18 Vhost ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2021-04-07 17:49 For freenode: https://freenode.net/kb/answer/cloaks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OldSchoolBBSer · 2021-04-07 18:12 If on linux, you may be able to script creating a fresh ipv6 for the session and loading the client with it. Unsure how involved that'd be. Even when done using that IP it would stick around some until it's automatically cleared out, you could reconnect with a fresh one while that's going on. Probably not ideal, but worth considering. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2021-04-07 23:09 IRC is from an earlier time when network traffic was trusted by default, and therefore is an inherently open protocol. According to the spec everyone sees the details of everyone else connected, usually in the form of nickname!username@hostname or nickname!username@ipaddress sent with every message from them relayed by the server. Many networks now implement IP or hostname masking of some form, either by default or opt-in, but you would have to check with your specific network's operators, who usually hang out in somewhere like #help or #feds or #ops depending on the network (or the network's website if they run one) to say for sure. Often IP masking, if the network supports it, still shows you your own hostname or IP address in things like /whois information, despite it being masked for other users. And obviously network operators (but not channel operators) can still see it regardless. If you really want to mask your IP address, use a VPN. If you want true anonymity, don't use IRC, it's not really built for it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scrawn69 · 2021-04-08 00:07 https://ircnow.org/ does what ever you need or #ircnow on most networks they are ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-04-09 02:23 /msg hostserv request to request one.
