bitchX client reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KurtMarz · 2021-03-31 08:45 Is it a bad idea to use BitchX since it hasn't been maintained or updated in so long? It's like my favorite and I used it for a long time so many years back .. now I came back to Linux and would love to use it.. or if anyone has any recommends for an IRC client to use... thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2021-03-31 09:05 It's probably fine. But you might want to try weechat or irssi first ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djernie · 2021-03-31 09:41 irssi is most commonly used as successor, often combined with screen or tmux to keep it running ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paffeu · 2021-03-31 09:42 No, it's not fine. Don't use it: [https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss- security/2021/03/24/2](https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss- security/2021/03/24/2) Use irssi or weechat instead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OldSchoolBBSer · 2021-03-31 13:25 They just confirm a DoS. Did this one end up leading to a remote code exec? If not, it should still be fine for general use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OldSchoolBBSer · 2021-03-31 13:31 I'm thinking even with the DoS it'd be fine, just don't run it on any critical machines and ideally sandboxed (like in a minimal VM or something). It was a fav of mine, but I ended up picking back up with weechat instead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scrutinizer80 · 2021-03-31 16:27 Just use irssi. It's mostly the same. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unixbeard · 2021-03-31 16:29 It's fine if that's what you want to use, but I'd use the development version (https://sourceforge.net/p/bitchx/git/ci/master/tree/) and make sure to `/set cloak 1` and `/save` to workaround the DoS released last week. But personally, after using BitchX for a very long time I switched to irssi and prefer it now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KurtMarz · 2021-03-31 19:46 I've decided not to, because I can't get it to compile anyway! lol thanks for the replies ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djordjecupic · 2021-03-31 20:50 Just use irssi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Machinehum · 2021-03-31 21:53 Yeah cept it doesn't have a cool name ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lukaso666 · 2021-03-31 21:55 just use weechat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zerosouls · 2021-04-01 02:08 I like weechat AND irssi. Though I feel like weechat handles window splitting a bit better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lukaso666 · 2021-04-01 06:56 of course, I'm not against **irsii**! ;) I had irssi as my first IRC client maaaany years, but since 5-6 years I prefer **weechat**. in my opinion, weechat with `/iset` is much more configurable; an example → [my weechat](https://chaos.social/system/media_attachments/f iles/105/921/048/186/252/873/original/8607cdedb1cc14b4.png) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KurtMarz · 2021-04-04 05:36 thanks for all the replies folks, I decided on Quassel actually, but I'll check out Irssi! Tried Weechat but I didn't really like it much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KurtMarz · 2021-04-04 05:38 exactrly! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KurtMarz · 2021-04-04 05:40 If I can figure out how to display a IRC chat in a Conky widget.. that would be awesome.. prolly need a terminal IRC client then though so I'll look ore into them. thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pseudocrat · 2021-04-14 15:01 I just started using weechat and found [this](https://gist.github.com/pascalpoitras/8406501) which was super useful to get started. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jonnywhatshisface · 2022-01-02 00:50 Looks like that was fixed about 8 months ago here: [https://github.com/BitchX/BitchX1.3/commit/50847e8fc03a222f8144c98b92 6e44b52a907670](https://github.com/BitchX/BitchX1.3/commit/50847e8fc03 a222f8144c98b926e44b52a907670) I only \[just this hour\] decided to start taking a look at BitchX and may try to get involved with getting it updated and maintained if I get a response from the devs. I've already gotten past the hurdle of getting SSL support compiled in to that version. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paffeu · 2022-01-02 01:06 Godspeed. If it's what you want to do, then do it :) The more IRC clients are maintained and actively developed, the merrier. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jonnywhatshisface · 2022-01-02 01:15 I’ve used it since the 90s (well, I’ve not used irc at all for ~10 years at this point until recently) and I can’t stand the thought of it collecting dust and not being used. It was my favorite irc client. Primarily because of the name, I’ll admit… :)
