Trying to move friends away from FB Groups, Discord--most newb friendly open source IRC clients? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cat-gun · 2021-03-29 22:06 I'm trying to move my friends from proprietary chat solutions like FB Messenger and Discord. What do you think are the most newb friendly, open source IRC clients? Right now, I'm thinking the solution is to weechat + glowing bear (that I set up for them). Thoughts? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hammer2379 · 2021-03-29 22:16 Get https://matrix.org it’s irc but better and more secure ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2021-03-29 22:31 Weechat might not be the most newb-friendly, but if they like it, sure. If not, check out Quassel or The Lounge ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2021-03-29 22:39 Are you subscribed to /r/irc just to tell people not to use IRC? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SlinginRopes · 2021-03-30 02:19 Just curious, what's wrong with Discord? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- QueenOfHatred · 2021-03-30 02:35 Mind you I am speaking from my perspective, but Some people have concerns about Discord logging everything (Privacy concern, even if you delete account) Also, Discord is closed-source, doesn't allow 3rd party clients, private company.. And I suppose some people want to move away from Discord because Discord is in talks of being bought by Microsoft ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cat-gun · 2021-03-30 02:53 What /u/QueenOfHatred said, plus Discord spies upon and censors its users: https://www.theverge.com/2021/1/27/22253251/discord-bans-the-r- wallstreetbets-server https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/b7eeii/discord_wants_to_cen sor_harmless_speech_while_the/ https://www.theverge.com/2021/1/8/22221579/discord-bans-the-donald- server-reddit-subreddit ---------------------------------------------------------------------- L_darkside · 2021-03-30 03:10 I actually have to agree with him tho. Element/matrix.org is really similar to Discord, and it doesn't disconnect when used from mobile connections like IRC. I think it's a great suggestion in this specific case ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kshrc · 2021-03-30 05:18 irc.bsdunix.us 6667 6697 ssl ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2021-03-30 05:30 Irccloud is pretty turn-key ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-03-30 06:13 Tencent proprietary spyware bloat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cat-gun · 2021-03-30 06:47 Thanks for the pointers! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cat-gun · 2021-03-30 06:48 Thanks! irccloud is proprietary though, right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2021-03-30 06:56 There are three IRC clients mentioned in this thread (four, including IRCCloud), all of which solve the disconnection problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2021-03-30 07:33 Yes, but IRC itself is open. You can get something similar to what IRCCloud offers by using Lounge, GlowingBear+WeeChat, or similar ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2021-03-30 07:34 Yes, but they work with other implementations to make sure every protocol feature they implement is standardized, so you don't get locked in. Of all the proprietary IM implementations I know of, they may be the only one to actually care about the protocol being open and interoperable ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IBNash · 2021-03-30 14:30 https://hexchat.github.io/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pierce_B_Architect · 2021-04-06 21:51 Now that this thread is made, is revolution irc the best app for on android? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Doujin_hikikomori · 2021-04-10 14:58 LimeChat is very easy to use if you have Mac.
