How to connect to Freenode using Hexchat, ProtonVPN on Pop!_OS

Beginner question here, I installed HexChat and was trying to connect
to freenode server, but would not connect.

Do you guys think this is because I am connected to my VPN? Is there
any way to connect while remaining connected at all times at my VPN?

I will appreciate your help, and thanks!

Since you're connecting from behind a VPN, it is most likely that SASL
authentication is required on that IP range.
https://freenode.net/kb/answer/sasl should get you pointed in the
right direction.
