What is up DALnet's ass? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr_William_H_Cosby · 2021-01-21 08:27 So, today I tried to register a nick from a shell server I use for all IRC. DALnet complains that this is a "VPN" (it's a Digital Ocean droplet). And uniquely, it insists on having my home IP address or I can't register a nick on account of "troublemakers." * My bank allows me to use a VPN if I want, once I authenticate through 2FA. * My 401k/Investment accounts similarly. * Literally everyone I deal with Except special snowflake DALnet who lusts for my home IP address. I get that troublemakers use VPSes and VPNs to cause problems but the idea that I am going to disable all of this and connect a different way to use IRC is user-hostile to a ridiculous extreme and almost hilarious in its presumptuousness. I have services running on this machine that rely on VPN; I am not going to cripple this system to use DALnet. It is getting to a point where I ask why bother anymore. Either an IRC network doesn't have services to register my nick or channel, or it has weird retrograde policies like this where it expects me to connect to the net in a way no other service requires me to. The issue is not whether they have a RIGHT to do this -- because god forbid we don't make this point -- but whether it makes *any sense at all.* Why even bother with IRC anymore? Can anyone recommend an IRC network with nickserv, chanserv (or equivalents) that understands it is 2020? Because holy fuckballs, I am not a troublemaker. I am, however, reasonably privacy-conscious and the expectation that I give that up to use an increasingly archaic service is ludicrous. No one else asks me to. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SadieKatze · 2021-01-21 08:37 If it's a shared provider then its probably blocked because allowing access from untrusted shared providers is a significant abuse source for IRC. If not then its probably from an IP which has been listed in a DNSBL as a source of abuse. Your bank and investment provider have both vetted your identity and know who you are which makes them completely different to a free chat network where anyone can connect to it without any kind of registration or identity verification. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bonemealxd · 2021-01-21 09:44 huge cocks probably theyve banned me multiple times ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-01-21 09:50 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nubatpython · 2021-01-21 13:54 I suspect that the network blocks the whole digital ocean vps up range, since a troublemaker could quickly use them to switch ips. This is the only way the irc network can stay moderated, since their staff may not want to spend all day fighting one spammer. Just try another irc network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2021-01-21 22:06 When I was active in running of snoonet, we had issues with trolls and bots using VPNs to ban evade. With a website or something, this is usually a matter of shoving a captcha in their way to eliminate bots, and requiring some form of auth to permit connections. With IRC you can't display a captcha terribly easily. Sure you could build a solution, that sends a link to an image or a challenge website or something, but thats effort, and a lot of networks are already short-staffed. So all you have left is the auth option. Shit for people without an account, but hey, its a compromise. We did that with tor for snoonet, and soem other endpoints. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMendelorian · 2021-01-22 13:11 Dont use a vpn for privacy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hisacro · 2021-01-22 13:50 ~~2 reasons I can think of,~~ ~~* Evil IP Neighbors did their job~~ ~~* Hosting a shitting arse VPN with Leakage~~ Edit: I take back what I said, DALnet seems like culprit ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-01-24 18:17 Hi - have been on Rizon for many years running my news bots with next- to-no issues/dramas. Has been a rock-solid network & they have really good vhost & BNC services...highly recommended. (ps not paid to say this...was just grateful to find a non-BS network). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- earthrock3r · 2021-01-28 01:48 Yeah dalnet does that crap to me too. You are welcome to come to irc.robothive.org if you would like ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spottedpogo · 2021-02-08 18:43 Hi, Dr. Cosby. \> My bank allows me to use a VPN if I want, once I authenticate through 2FA. Similar to how your bank allows you to connect once you're authenticated, DALnet also allows you to use a VPN, once you register your nick to prove that you're not just some flood bot or hacked IoT device. You could get around the VPN detection by simply clicking the registration link from your mobile phone with WiFi turned off. Or I'm sure you can come up with a hundred other ways since you seem tech savvy. There is a balance here between a small 10-second inconvenience for a human versus a network filled with flooding and other types of abuse because it's too wide open. I'd rather err on the side of the former. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-02-10 09:29 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-02-10 09:34 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hanksaid · 2021-02-11 17:19 Why should I give my IP to Dalnet's IRC Operators? I see your point, but no... just, no. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kzshantonu · 2021-02-23 20:46 Well there's always residential VPN ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ksx4system · 2021-06-17 06:31 exactly, it's just a tool to jump into your own network ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMendelorian · 2021-06-17 10:43 *visible confusion* ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ksx4system · 2021-06-19 22:12 Let me explain lol. By using 3rd party "public" VPN provider you're not gaining any privacy but actually switching which 3rd party institution can violate your privacy by analysing your traffic. Alternatively you can be your own provider (just rent a VPS or dedicated Linux box from a reputable provider and then slap OpenVPN or strongSwan IKEv2 server on it) which gives you a little bit more control and allows for communication between your devices even if they're not on the same LAN. None of these gains you much privacy (just convenience) unless of course you went by 2nd route and got your VPS/dedi anonymously or using fake data and paid via BTC or other crypto. Less confused now? :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ksx4system · 2021-06-19 22:26 This exactly. Small inconvenience to keep network usable for everyone with good intentions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ksx4system · 2021-06-19 22:36 \> Can anyone recommend an IRC network with nickserv, chanserv (or equivalents) that understands it is 2020? DALnet lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ksx4system · 2021-06-19 22:38 You don't have to give them your actual IP. They've probably just blocked public VPN providers because of received abuse. Make yourself your own VPN and/or get yourself bouncer account. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMendelorian · 2021-06-20 14:43 i know this from before, i just dont knwow how this relates to your comment "exactly, it's just a tool to jump into your own network"
