IRC nostalgia reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HaloDestroyer · 2021-01-20 18:30 Just booted up mIRC and connected for the first time in absolutely ages, over a decade for sure. Pretty shocked at how quiet it is - not how I remember it. Back in about 2006, 2007, I used to boot up the Chatzilla extension on my Firefox browser, and connect to irc.triviachat.org Used to hang out in #Cyberchat, great crowd in there, made some friends. They had a website back in the day, that's long gone though. Anyone happen know what happened to that server? Also, any great little communities still out there today? I was on IRCnet (#Worldchat) last night, pretty active in there. Any recommendations? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2021-01-20 19:10 > Anyone happen know what happened to that network? Discord replaced it in the minds of people who want realtime chat. Discord, which has backscroll (don't need a bouncer or bot to log channel activity), image support, and so forth. Periodically we get questions about having trouble connecting to IRC. In our "click to run the app" world, IRC is not considered a simple application, which is probably a bit mind-bending to some of us. Then you talk about the fact that many IRC servers still blast out your IP address to everyone unless you use a VPN, tor, or a cloak is available, and, well, it doesn't compete well. I use IRC; I like the decentralized/non-corporate aspect of it. If Discord folds, it's going to take a lot with it. > Pretty shocked at how quiet it is - not how I remember it. The other thing is the way people use computers has changed. A long time ago people logged in to chat, and especially in the dialup days, tended to disconnect (or be force-disconnected) when they were done. Now it is possible to log into IRC and stay logged in for months at a time and even forget the client is running. I've even seen some channels which boot and ban people who idle too long. > Also, any great little communities still out there today? Some of the communities on Snoonet are alright depending on your interest (those are channels associated with subreddits). Freenode is the big tech community network and there are many active channels there but most of them are not for casual conversation and on-topic- ness is severely enforced. Personally, I'm a little tired of logging into communities that throw words like "fag" and "retard" around freely (the former often as tired hipster irony people can't seem to get over). Even fairly active channels seem to cause people to regress to a 12 year old mentality for some reason, which isn't fun for me anymore. It's just tedious and played out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MinimumExam · 2021-01-20 20:13 Similar boat. I was in a bunch of Halo servers, using Chatzilla on Firefox (which was defunct a year or so ago). IMHO I wouldn't recommend Freenode as someone with a similar experience, and tbh I've had a lot more success on user-made IRC networks like MBRnet. (Though tbh I think it's just about finding the right people and working it into a channel afterwards) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- P4k3 · 2021-01-20 20:41 Just a matter of picking a client that supports those features. The lounge or IRCCloud has both scrollback and image support.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-01-20 23:19 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loulan · 2021-01-20 23:25 We nostalgic people need to create a channel somewhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2021-01-20 23:27 > It didn't replace anything. There is factually a fraction of IRC users compared to the number there used to be. This is not in dispute. > this is why it's still alive and doing well. It is a shell of what it used to be in the 90s. > but handing over all your personal information to a centralized and proprietary system that cooperates with law enforcement is better, is it? It is probably safer than some random chud with a lot of free time abusing your IP address in the minds of many, yes. I can't even imagine what possible reason anyone would hand over my information "to law enforcement" for. Nonetheless, not a Discord user, but a lot of people are. > IRC will be around long after Discord is gone. And smaller, still. > Consider coping harder. I don't have to cope with anything. I use IRC and don't use Discord. I have been using IRC since 1992. It is not what it was. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat > IRC reached 6 million simultaneous users in 2001 and 10 million users in 2003, dropping to 371k in 2018. That's not how the Internet works. > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deoptima · 2021-01-21 05:16 Oh the days of IRC servers and all that entails, I had a Linux shell server service I ran back in the late 90s we were tailored to IRC and bots mainly, but we did have a rather small dial-up and even smaller dsl service locally. I had a blast doing it, was a project I put together when I was as teenager with the help of my Uncle and some of the smartest people I’ve ever met, but they were also some of the people that ran the largest internet provider in the early 90s where I was at the time other than AOL at least within the local dialing area back then they were the biggest BBS service in the area too. Ahhh nostalgia over my IRC years... damn that was good times for sure ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skrvd98 · 2021-01-21 05:24 The spiritual successor of IRC is Matrix. Install Element and there are plenty of active rooms for you to join. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mDodd · 2021-01-21 07:29 Back on those days I used to have a landline at home, play 16 bit consoles (not by option, but because that cutting edge), spend 100% of my digital time in a desktop computer and watch Fresh Prince during lunch (it arrived quite late in Brazil, but still, late nineties). Times change, our demands change, the existing technologies adapt to it. It's like (in a more extreme scenario) commenting how BBSs were so cool for several reasons and complaining that Reddit replaced it. Times change, technologies adapt. Unfortunately, there's nearly zero chance that your memories of IRC will somehow become a reality again. And that's fine. At some point in the future, the next generation, who was born in the WhatsApp/Twitter/Discord age, will recall their fond memories of those social networks and ask themselves what happened. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- uhp787 · 2021-01-21 17:20 i am on several nets for too long now :D mostly we idle but it is still nice to login and chat with a friend when you want too. some channels are still very acti9ve depending on your interests...but sure many user simply grew up and moved onto real life. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MinimumExam · 2021-01-21 21:02 I vote for a channel named #nostalgia. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sloppy-svetlana · 2021-02-02 04:49 Sorry to hear that, but that's how most IRC servers are these days. I hope you manage to get in touch with your old friends again! Since you ask about communities that are still active, try `#gnulag` on `irc.snoonet.org:6697`. Requires NickServ auth + SSL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JoyceDivision · 2021-02-02 16:13 I had a major bit of IRC nostalgia recently too. Used to hang out on IrcQnet in the late 90s to 2005 or so. #warlords and #music were the best places to be. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MrKeagan · 2021-02-05 19:09 IRCnet EFnet and definitely FreeNode are still very active how ever alot is moving to matrix now as a IRC replacement. some transfered to Slack and Discord ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chopin2712 · 2021-02-07 22:42 I don't agree. Some of us come and go, but there is normally about 8 - 10 of us that are constantly on. Some days it's busier than others. We also jump on and play a few games together: Shellshock, amongus, etc. Not that any of us are really looking to game, but sometimes we just want to laugh, have fun, and enjoy ourselves. It's certainly changed, but I think discord and text messaging has become a bigger thing than ever. We prefer sitting at our computers and enjoying a good chat while programming, making music, or whatever our hobbies are.
