Dumb question-So I paid $10 for the microsoft Hexchat, but when I click on the link, instead of taking me to a download page, it takes me back to the payment page. I've never used this before, can someone give me a quick intro on how to get on? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- niceloner10463484 · 2021-01-15 08:39 I have windows 10, 64 bit, version 1909. Thank you all! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frostyoni · 2021-01-15 12:14 Isn't [hexchat free](https://hexchat.github.io/downloads.html)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LtWorf_ · 2021-01-15 12:49 I think you got scammed… ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheBoogalooBoys · 2021-01-15 12:53 Other people saying its free and you got scammed, and even if it wasnt free there are countless of free ones out there. If you are buying something only buy it from the official page! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ranghild · 2021-01-15 13:04 Not really. The store version is $9.99. I think of it a way to donate to TingPing (who was/is one? of the developers and frequented #hexchat on Freenode, no longer does). Edit: OP could perhaps just, if possible, refund the money, get the installer from the official website and donate through PayPal or Patreon, both of which can be found on the official site. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KnightHawk3 · 2021-01-15 15:16 https://hexchat.github.io/downloads.html They did buy it from the official page, they arent scammed. The $10 is a donation / convenience fee for the MS store. You can see it's linked on the download page above. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chi_-_chi · 2021-01-15 19:53 Yeah, it's free. I didn't pay anything to use it; mIRC has a one time registration fee that I'm aware of. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2021-01-16 00:24 Hexchat is free and is not a Microsoft product. You got bamboozled ---------------------------------------------------------------------- niceloner10463484 · 2021-01-16 00:36 Can u pm me? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-01-16 01:16 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AtomicFurion · 2021-01-16 01:57 Darn I Had forgotten I wanted to get back to IRC. So off to get hex ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mikey-506 · 2021-01-16 03:03 it is, comes standard with many linux distros ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ken852 · 2021-01-16 23:58 It's true that it's not a Microsoft product. But I'm not so sure he got "bamboozled". He may have gotten it via Microsoft Store. When you view the product page in Microsoft Store and you click on the "More" link, it tells you that "this application is free the purchase is optional". I have seen this before, for HexChat specifically, but also a few of the other "free" software that you can normally get free of charge if you get a regular EXE installer file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ken852 · 2021-01-17 00:00 What link? What's the name of the link? Are you using the Microsoft Store? What have you not used before, HexChat or Microsoft Store? By "takes me back to the payment page" you mean you get to see the HexChat product page again? As I recall it's normal to get back to the same page when downloading apps from Microsoft Store. The installation itself is performed automatically in the background and it may have already finished without you knowing it (especially with Focus assist enabled). As I already said: >When you view the product page in Microsoft Store and you click on the "More" link, it tells you that "this application is free the purchase is optional". I have seen this before, for HexChat specifically, but also a few of the other "free" software that you can normally get free of charge if you get a regular EXE installer file. This should be viewed more like a "donation" rather than a purchase. Also, this version of HexChat is not the same as the one you get for "free" by downloading the EXE file from the HexChat website. Since it's downloaded and installed from Microsoft Store it also means that this is a UWP app as opposed to a classic Win32 app. Meaning, that this one can run on all Windows 10 devices, including your Windows 10 Phone and Windows 10 tablet. The Win32 may be able to run on these devices also, but maybe not as well. The UWP stuff should be optmized for touch devices, or more so than any Win32 app that Windows 10 still can run on other device types since it's a universal operating system now, but not as well as its UWP counterparts. The developer may simply be asking for a donation for his time spent on converting this classic IRC client from Win32 to UWP, and maintining it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-05-11 08:54 [deleted]
