whatever happened to #blissout on starchat? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bluehandstouchingme · 2020-12-30 03:34 i was recently listening to "the astronauts are sleeping" by her space holiday. it's one of those somewhat obscure late 90s to early 00s cd releases. the label that released it, "skylab", is long defunct(1994 to 2006), but they included an irc channel in their contact page. i'm going to take a guess and say that this _wasn't_ a channel simply dedicated to the label -- bliss out was the name used for darla's "rock gone ambient" series of releases and generally related to a scene of shoegaze/slowcore/idm/ambient influenced acts from the mid 90s to mid 00s. i tried to connect to starchat, only to find it went under about a year ago, so that lead is totally gone. at this point i'm begging for any info, and wondering maybe if there's any surviving remnants. culture, especially relating to the internet and music is fragile. it's a little terrifying that most of the content whoever was there produced is probably remembered by a hundred people at most and is pretty liable to disappear entirely. "The flame is currently out, but there are burning embers still glowing." is the quote the memorial site uses for skylab, but i'm not sure how much longer those embers will last. the pre-2010s internet is rapidly decaying thanks to rise of social media and such and maybe the last memories of this shit exists in the head of a bunch of mid 40s guitar nerds and autistic internet slowcore listeners. when do you die? is it when everyone you knew dies? is it when the last link to what you did goes dead? or when the archive.org page of what you made disappears? i don't know, but i fear a future when all these reflective plastic discs rot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2021-01-08 09:13 That network is dead, but you might be able to follow this trail and find them. https://www.reddit.com/r/irc/comments/c3xog1/starchat/
