How to set up a basic irc server on a home pc, and access it through internet. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- johndoeunique · 2020-12-27 01:02 I managed to install ircd-hybrid irc server on my debian pc, and could access the local irc server with a irssi client, however, can't figure out how to access it through the internet. For internet, I'm using my phone as a tether/access point. What steps do I need to follow to solve this issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-12-27 01:57 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nawcom · 2020-12-27 04:41 You forward ports through a NAT you set up on your gateway. If in this case it's a cellphone hotspot so I can't I can't help there. It would be smarter to use a virtual private server through a host like Digital Ocean or Vultr and run your ircd from there. They're basically virtual machines with publicly facing static internet IPs. You can set up Debian on these just like how you already have done it at home and remotely access via ssh (hopefully securing that through cert/public key). Prices for those are really cheap for what little you need to run an ircd. Don't run servers that route through some cellphone hotspot if you want to seriously use them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- phate408 · 2020-12-27 05:19 Seconded, a $5/month Digital Ocean droplet is more than enough for an IRCd and would have much more positive results. And, johndoeunique, I think it's very unlikely you'd be able to set up the NAT rules/port forward you'd need through a cell phone tether. A dedicated hotspot device may be able to do so however. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bird_0f_Hermes · 2020-12-27 07:23 Google Cloud also has a free tier that would work for an IRC server as well, if you are cost adverse. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- johndoeunique · 2020-12-29 22:28 Thanks for the suggestion, I was aware of vps prior to posting this thread, and had previously set up a irc server, couple years back to chat with my buddies, good days, had super fun, but this time thought should try on my home pc. Nevertheless, will keep tinkering, and will let you know. In the mean time, just googled "irc server android apk" and came across this very old irc server apk on apkpure(probably the first search result on google), and downloaded it, but didn't install it, I did a virustotal.com scan on the app, and found it's a malware(although not 100% sure about that). If someone is up for some malware app investigation, here's the app link https://m.apkpure.com/irc-server/com.icecoldapps.ircserver
