How do I set folders to share in HexChat? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Up2Eleven · 2020-12-20 02:39 I go to some channels and they say I must be sharing, which I'm happy to do. I just have no idea how. Also, how do I get "voiced" (get a + by my nick)? Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nawcom · 2020-12-20 05:27 There's no real file sharing protocol on IRC through an IRC client in the same way other p2p sharing works - what you do is either send or receive files on demand with the `/dcc send ${user to send file to} filename` and `/dcc get {user to receive file from} filename` commands. With HexChat you can set a default directory where files you receive get saved to. Making a list of files shown as available involves scripts that respond to text triggers from other people in order to show that you have files available to send, as well as the ability to send the file automatically when called by someone else. This is referred to as [XDCC](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XDCC) There are better irc clients out there that have a more friendly interface for manually sending and receiving files over irc in a basic manner, but running an XDCC bot or script is something different. That's why i'm curious what they're specifically asking for regarding the "sharing" requirement. Google and check out other clients. Though I'm not a fan of mIRC I remember it being a bit more friendly regarding DCC send/get graphical dialogs for manually transferring files, at least compared to HexChat. Being voiced is a mode set to a user in a channel and can be used to control a person's abilities in the channel, that might be basically to be able to chat there, or for other privileges like being able to interact with bots there. The people operating the channel decide who gets that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Up2Eleven · 2020-12-20 05:45 I'm more familiar with Soulseek where you can basically specify folders that people can access and grab what they want. Is there any way to do that via IRC without having to set up bots and all of that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rro99 · 2020-12-20 23:17 Like he said, filesharing isn't a thing in IRC. You're describing an FTP server. Your best bet is to run one and hand out the link.
