Having trouble using my registered nick on freenode

I rebooted my system today, and when I logged into freenode IRC using
HexChat I wasn't quick to authenticate and I was assigned a temporary
nickname. Now when I try to connect with my registered nick I get an
error saying the nick is already in use, likely because I did have an
active session before rebooting:

> NICKNAME is already in use. Retrying with NICKNAME1...

When I try to reclaim the ghost session with `/msg nickserv ghost
NICKNAME PASSWORD` though, it throws back an error saying the user is
not online:

> NICKNAME is not online.

I also tried `/nick NICKNAME` but this just throws yet another error:

> NICKNAME :Nick/channel is temporarily unavailable

I need to have a registered user for some channels and I really don't
want to have to re-register a new nickname. What can I do here?

I have since figured out how to have HexChat auto-authenticate but I
did not have this in place earlier when this issue started happening.

I figured out how to fix it. I wasn't able to use GHOST to reclaim the
session (or however it works) but I was able to use the RELEASE
command of nickserv. Then I was able to `/nick NICKNAME` and then
IDENTIFY to it.

Setup and use a bouncer like ZNC, it will make using IRC a lot easier
and pleasurable.
