What keeps you using IRC? And not using Discord, etc... reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dirkan · 2020-11-24 20:47 Discord privacy issues. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dim13 · 2020-11-24 21:49 It works™, since 1988. IM networks come and go, I lost count on them, IRC stays. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2020-11-24 23:22 Well for starters, IRC is not an app. IRC is a protocol. I'm out of use of it for a while. But as another person pointed out, the usage of IRC has survived many competitors. There are unique advantages due to this. All these other communication apps require a single software. IRC has a lot of apps with different features to use to communicate using the IRC protocol. Or dont use an app, fire up telnet and explore the protocol at its most basic (and least user friendly). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pedz · 2020-11-25 02:33 You resume it very well. I was going to reply with one word: decentralized. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IBNash · 2020-11-25 08:05 Because I can use Discord in my IRC client, using Bitlbee. Amongst many other protocols, in a lightweight terminal client of my choice ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-11-25 10:52 Writing scripts for bots like eggdrop and being able to use a wide variety of networks... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spork119 · 2020-11-26 00:56 It's much easier to get away with crime on irc than discord. Join #crime on efnet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- enix_ · 2020-11-27 00:13 I disagree. I find telnet quite user friendly :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2020-11-27 03:32 You are a more daring man than I if you found using telnet as an irc client friendly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sloppy-svetlana · 2020-11-28 11:26 Because investing in open protocols is the only smart move. No corporation to control servers/clients, spy on me to show me ads, make user hostile decisions about the way things work to improve CTR on said ads, and then kill off the product to make way for something new. `#gnulag` on `irc.snoonet.org` is a decent place to hang if you're a programmer or sysadmin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IBNash · 2020-11-30 06:07 Discord is an application, with sketchy privacy issues. IRC is the world's oldest IM protocol, and I can use discord on it among oh I dunno, twenty other newfangled apps/protocols, so why would I tie myself down? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fattywompus_ · 2020-11-30 17:08 The people... And I do also use Discord plenty. I don't think they're mutually exclusive. But I've just returned to IRC after a long absence and I think the most brilliant and beautiful minds seem to congregate on freenode. Sure there are some great people on discord and some forums like reddit. But freenode is a much more distilled mix. I still use discord for gaming comms and whatnot and other platforms and forums. But there's noplace like freenode. Plus what everyone else is saying about the openness and lack of corporate involvement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Switch_Initial · 2020-12-02 21:33 I’ve used IRC for awhile now and I guess that I am just use to it and like it now ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -Felipe_soares- · 2023-01-20 19:00 BECAUSE THERE ARE NO RULES (basically anarchy) and programming channels (mainly #haskell at irc.libera.chat:6697)
