Why Kids or Young People Today Dont Use IRC? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeoReddit2012 · 2020-10-06 20:55 Why? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- el_seano · 2020-10-06 21:02 Significantly less cognitive load using managed messaging services with dedicated UIs than developing a basic understanding of the protocol and determining which client to use. Likely no perceptible advantage to IRC from their perspective, and their peers are more likely to be on something like Discord, Hangouts, etc. Why would they want to jump on Freenode and talk to a bunch of 30+ year olds about FOSS? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LurkingRascal76188 · 2020-10-06 21:24 The question may be why use IRC when services like messaging, voice and video calls + other "social" ones are available in one app like WhatsApp. I believe I am in the young people group and I haven't found a user- friendly client since I switched to Win10. I really liked HexChat, but you have to pay to use it on this platform. And rn I don't have much spare time to look for my perfect client, so I haven't connected to a server for months. Also, what I find interesting about IRC is the variety of technology channels, although I often don't speak. I have been reading a lot from old magazines, introducing IRC and all of its modes, but in the end that's too much info to read some news, follow the number of COVID cases and browse some tech/software channels. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XP_Studios · 2020-10-06 21:44 discord ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XP_Studios · 2020-10-06 21:45 In all seriousness, it can be confusing to understand servers and commands, and it's much simpler to just go to a website and start spamming memes. Also, Discord and the like have much more moderation than IRC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shinto29 · 2020-10-06 21:53 I have not come across any fun channels at all, to be honest. They're always way too slow, dead or about a very very specialised topic. Usually something software related. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-06 22:03 Because the barrier to entry is too high and better services exist. IRC's been replaced since it's missing important features (message history, file sharing, etc.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-06 22:17 why would they? mobile clients are terrible, most young people use their phones for messaging. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ariZon_a · 2020-10-06 22:19 hexchat? pay? what? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-06 22:52 You don't/It's free, fucking christ how stupid are people? From the "Windows 10 App" website: "NOTE: This application is free the purchase is optional." and the normal installer is Windows 7**+**, people really don't know what the + means? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-10-07 01:07 That explains why he doesn't use IRC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Treyzania · 2020-10-07 01:11 This is unfortunately true. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tyumen_ · 2020-10-07 01:13 I'm 17 years old, and the only reason I know anything about IRC is through a website called the [SCP wiki](http://scpwiki.com). I think it's because most people nowadays are accustomed to more feature- packed, all-purpose clients like Discord, Instagram DMs, and Slack, although IRC does have its charm... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GDZippN · 2020-10-07 02:20 Having your own Discord server with multiple channels is free. The average person who wants to chat with friends doesn't want to go through the trouble of setting up an IRC server, nor do they really want to pay for an IRC hosting service. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- soverypicturesque · 2020-10-07 03:23 it's definitely archaic in many ways but I think it's really cool even though I'm not super familiar with it yet. IRC isn't as active as Discord. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LurkingRascal76188 · 2020-10-07 07:06 In the Microsoft Store you have to pay to download and in a comparison webpage it was noted as that, that the official page stated it was free but there you have to pay. And IIRC in the official page the installer says for Win7, 8 and 8.1. Anyways, as these days I'm busy I didn't want to test the backwards compatibility of win10. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Equinoxdawg · 2020-10-07 07:20 > In the Microsoft Store you have to pay to download Someone already rightfully told you that's not true, why do you insist on peddling such easily disproven falsehoods? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LurkingRascal76188 · 2020-10-07 07:21 Thanks for the explanation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jezon · 2020-10-07 07:21 TBH i haven't used IRC in about 4 years. have you guys checked out telegram or the other modern chat options? I like messing around with linux and coding stuff in python, and the simplicity of the IRC protocol makes it easy to make bots on there. It's more text based, compared to discord being a mix of images, emotes, and text with formatting. IRC and discord are like gopher and http, both are attractive in their own ways ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nubatpython · 2020-10-07 08:31 I'm a teenager and have recently got back into IRC. My previous experience with IRC was just like: Ok, I saw the word 'IRC' being mentioned in this programming tutorial, let me Google it Oh, it seems pretty cool, maybe I'll try it *Downloads HexChat* Connects to a random preset network O.o so many channels! Sees a channel that seems kinda interesting Stay there for around a month, setting up a limnoria bot and downloading other people's plugins (didn't make my own) Irl event happens and I forget about IRC Tbh barrier of entry isn't that high, just the amount of information can be overwhelming so it's nicer to have someone experienced with you the first time you join IRC... Znc with the logging plugin can be used to store message history, and DCC can share files TL;DR The community has found workarounds for features not in the RFCs but the information can be overwhelming, turning away new users ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nubatpython · 2020-10-07 08:32 Yea, when I do need to use irc on mobile I ssh to my raspberry pi then use irssi. I also like the gopher protocol, not because it is obsolete (it's not, just there's less users) but because of its simplicity. I like software I can look at and understand easily, and modify it's behavior/create my own client or bot for it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-07 08:44 i just think you can't expect the average random kid to know what any of this means or does. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nubatpython · 2020-10-07 08:48 Yea, I can imagine someone reading my comment and think, "What's ssh?
