ZNC Buffer Questions reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- automaticfts · 2020-10-05 02:10 Hey all, I'm brand new to IRC. I've read and watched as many videos as I could find on best practices and setups for IRC, and I'm now set with HexChat on my computer & Igloo on my iPhone. I have a ZNC set up, and everything is working properly but I'm confused about some features as I try to fine tune my setup. * I want to be able to keep HexChat open and running on my PC 24/7 * I want to be able to pop in and out of Igloo whenever and catch up on messages in the channel. * I want to be able both clients to retain messages (without repeating ZNC log) for the past 48 hours, or so. My understanding is that the ZNC buffer setup is what allows me to accomplish this. What do you all, who have been using it forever, have your perfect settings as? I enabled "buffextras" but found that I don't care about joins, parts, etc. Messages is really the only thing that I care about seeing. * Is there any reason to enable/disable "Auto Clear Chan Buffer" and/or "Auto Clear Query Buffer"? * What do you find to be a good setting for Channels "Default Modes" & "Buffer Size"? Thanks in advance for any guidance and insight that you can provide! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nubatpython · 2020-10-05 08:01 I have been using znc for a while now and I find that I get duplicated messages a lot. It's fine since if I need anything I can just run a text search on the hexchat log files. I have my znc message buffer set to 100, since the channels I am on are mainly filled with join and leave messages. I don't think I set any channel default modes, I'm just using the default. I haven't used Igloo before so I can't really give much advice about setting that up. If I need to check messages on mobile, I just ssh to my raspberry pi and use irssi to connect to znc. I don't really see any reason to set auto clear buffers, I'm just using the default settings with the features I want turned on ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DarienLambert · 2020-10-05 21:43 Add the [clientbuffer](https://wiki.znc.in/Clientbuffer) plugin and then login to your ZNC like `username@identifier/NetworkName:password` Add `autoadd` to the arguments in your webadmin console or turn on autoadd before you reconnect so that new devices get automatically added. The `identifier` should be like `pc247hexchat` or `iglooiphone` so each client has their own. With clientbuffer, you'll get just the buffer that device hasn't seen and you'll get what you want. Uncheck auto clear chan/query buffers. Then enable the log/scrollback in your clients for the number of lines you want so they can show what happened prior (like igloo and hexchat) since it won't replay the buffer to that client again that already saw it. Add in buffextras like you have as well if you want the join/parts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- automaticfts · 2020-10-06 00:46 this is great info, thank you! i may be back with some specific questions haha. this will certainly get me started
