RubiksDude95 Dont use IRC Because it has no Encryption (Discord Chat about IRC) reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wraithnix · 2020-09-26 20:00 ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeoReddit2012 · 2020-09-26 20:02 Why? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jhoneycutt · 2020-09-26 20:29 Some / most? IRC daemons do support TLS, so this is not necessarily true. Personally, I am not too worried about it either way, because I don't think anyone cares enough to monitor my friends and I talking about TV shows and sharing memes. If you are plotting to overthrow the government or something, use something with e2ee. Don't use IRC or Discord. Neither offers the security you need. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeoReddit2012 · 2020-09-26 22:23 Why? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jhoneycutt · 2020-09-27 05:57 On both IRC and Discord using only TLS, your message is encrypted in transit to the server, then the server decrypts it to relay it to your intended target. The server operator is able to see your unencrypted messages. In protocols that use e2ee, or end-to-end encryption, this is not possible. Only your intended target has the key to decrypt your messages. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gandoon · 2020-09-29 23:41 I ask people who swear by monitored/system moderated/censored services like Discord et al. the same “why?” No end-to-end encryption available there, unless using copy-pasted e.g. pgp/gpg-encrypted messages. A lot of manual work… ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-10-08 13:50 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jhoneycutt · 2020-10-08 17:37 Well, the reason why is that it's a significant hurdle to do this over IRC. Each new user needs to install a script for their particular client and then verify themselves in some fashion. If you and your friends all want to do that, go ahead! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TwistedNet · 2020-10-31 20:50 SSL = encryption TwistedNET IRC Chat Network Webchat [https://kiwi.twistednet.org/](https://kiwi.twistednet.org/) Server Info: [IRC.TwistedNET.org](https://IRC.TwistedNET.org) Channel: #Twisted Port: 6667 SSL: 6697 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lmns_ · 2020-11-13 00:15 Why should e2e create more overhead server side? The whole point of e2e is that the server isn't involved.
