hate and irc in 2020 reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RajoGuna · 2020-09-14 05:24 So I hadn't been on IRC in ages. Joined back an old network a week ago. Everything going fine. I told ONE person a week ago I was trans in PM after he couldn't tell from a few photos I shared, when the topic came up. Fast forward to today, some guy is claiming a lot of people in a certain religion are pedophiles and I say I know they aren't as I'm one and I name drop an important figure in it I've talked to once. Now, earlier maybe 20 mins before I did link a selfie in relation to a joke. The guy suddenly thinks that the picture was me with this guy and claims I had a pic with a pedophile. After he actually looks like it he calls me a "fat chick" ([im not fat btw](https://www.instagram.com/p/CCgs2j- JK2M/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link)) and the guy I talked to last week says I'm not a woman and outs me. Cue some "it's" slurs and other crap from the 2. Chan op devoiced them and I go to check network policy and basically the answer I get is unless I'm doxxed or they try to circumvent /ignore there isn't much they will do. Then another op revoices the two after like 10 mins. I thought this was 2020 and we knew better. Outing is a form of violence as it can put is in the cross hairs for harassment, doxxing or physical violence and it leads to dehumanizing experiences like the one above. Does anyone know an active irc network that doesn't allow this kind of crap? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jimb0z_ · 2020-09-14 05:42 You may want to consider a completely different platform. Discord, perhaps ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-09-14 08:32 There's plenty of dickheads on public networks especially on the older low-intervention networks like EFnet (which really needs to die already imo). I don't really have any specific advice but I'd recommend avoiding those and looking for newer more community-oriented networks. Also try not to feed the dickhead trolls because they want you to respond to them and they'll just keep harassing you if you keep feeding them. Unfortunately though being a queer woman on the internet means you're considerably more likely to be harassed than the average cishet dude. The only thing I've really found to avoid this is by surrounding myself with other queer women in spaces where we have moderation controls. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2020-09-14 08:50 The irony there is that EFNet exists because the network it formed out of, Anarchy Net or A-Net wasnt restrictive enough. Although that was on a technical level, A-Net had a server called Eris that allowed anyone else to link a server to it, so anyone could install the IRCd, join it up and cause havoc. So they invented the Q-line and made the Eris Free Network, or EFNet. Sorry your experience sucked, OP. There are still good networks and channels out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- foverzar · 2020-09-14 11:01 \> Chan op devoiced them and I go to check network policy and basically the answer I get is unless I'm doxxed or they try to circumvent /ignore there isn't much they will do. Outing is a form of violence as it can put is in the cross hairs for harassment, doxxing or physical violence and it leads to dehumanizing experiences like the one above. Well what did you expect? That you could go somwhere where some edgelords shitpost and have wierd discussions and all these people would be nice to you? Why would you even think that "some guy is claiming a lot of people in a certain religion are pedophiles" would have a civil discussion with you? \> Does anyone know an active irc network that doesn't allow this kind of crap? You should stick with reddit/facebook/discord or any other clean and nice platform. People go to IRC for stuff you wouldn't normaly find on these platforms, so if you can't handle some harsh opinions and other good/bad/ugly stuff which goes with mostly unmoderated speach, than unmoderated speach is just not for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- l0de · 2020-09-14 11:46 Try EFnet, it's very progressive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dijit · 2020-09-14 12:50 Some percentage of people are just shit. This applies to all sides, sadly. It’s not an indictment of IRC specifically, but all communities that have shitheads unchecked with act as a lightening rod for more shitheads. Anyway, if you want a friendly irc community then I run one. Disclaimer though: it’s not a safe space, it’s a social space. If you are sensitive to any particular subject then it’s not for you, since we treat each other like friends even if we disagree. So try to assume good faith if someone has questions about your transition and just let them know if you’re uncomfortable. It’s hard to know where the line is when you may be curious and it’s a very sore subject for most people. Anyway: ircs://irc.darkscience.net:6697/darkscience ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zsfh · 2020-09-14 14:14 If you're worried about dox it will be a very good idea for you to not hand out what I assume is your real IG with your real name willy- nilly. You shouldn't post photos you've also posted on public social media either, since a tool such as TinEye could be used to find out the other places you've posted it. A big part of doxing is just revealing some pseudoanonymous user's real-life identity, and you've basically done that to yourself. It's also probably a good idea for you not to hand-out personal information such as your gender status, if you're not OK with it being used against you. IRC is culturally fine with you just being a name on a screen. Lastly, this isn't something directly related to what you mentioned, but if you're going to give photos of yourself to random people you don't know well keep a tight lid on what details about job, location, age, so on you leak. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ExBritNStuff · 2020-09-14 14:16 For me, IRC stopped being about general chat a long time ago for this, and a multitude of other reasons. Now when I use IRC it is either for work (we have our own server we hang out in) or related to very specific topics/tools on Freenode. In those contexts bullying is much easier to address because we/they have stronger mod policies and reasons to control hateful speech, and it is much easier to identify and pinpoint. I'd say identify a few topics that you're interested in and find channels related to those. If you have a favorite TV show, game, or whatever, those are a great example. If you're into computers and specifically a Linux/OSS person, even better! That way the conversation is naturally going to have a flow and direction, and not default to the lowest common denominator of other chatters of "hurr durr trans". While there is probably a natural draw to trans-focused groups, I'd say probably avoid those, at least initially, so you can have interaction that doesn't revolve around that one component of your entire personality. I.e let yourself be a Star Trek fan, not a trans Star Trek fan. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-09-14 16:31 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RajoGuna · 2020-09-14 23:27 I never said i was worried about doxxing, just that thats what they said was the only time they would do anything. Also no it didn't tie to my irl identity, just my one I write as online which isn't a big deal. My only point was that it can make people a target not that I'm specifically worried about myself, just other people. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RajoGuna · 2020-09-14 23:30 so directing harassment and slurs at other users is okay? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zsfh · 2020-09-15 02:37 Depending on the community you are trying to join, it may be? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zsfh · 2020-09-15 02:45 Other people might be hurt as a result of their participation in various internet activities, but that's up to them what they involve themselves with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-09-15 09:30 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scriminal · 2020-09-15 13:32 Not trying to defend hateful comments, but IRC is mostly unmoderated, especially at the server/network level. Some channels might moderate more but you can't expect it. If you're looking for a moderated chat platform, I'd stay here on reddit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dannzsche · 2020-09-16 02:10 lol, you are so cute and this people here in the commentaries are just shitheads too ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OpitzINC · 2020-09-17 06:33 YO are you for real ? this sure is 2020, & youve gotta remember theyll be idiots into the thirtieth century and beyond my friend. You just do you and those who dont like it can kick rocks 'cause the only place a rock rolls is to the bottom. As far as the current IRC atmosphere, I happened across this and I havent really used mIRC much since long time aho when MSN had IRC chatrooms, so I the only networks I know of are small ones, just a bunch of old friends, same people everyday\\ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techsan47 · 2020-09-17 12:39 "Moderated" channels are just as bad. From what I've seen all "ops" on IRC do is kick users for petty reasons, while allowing trolling and all sorts of nonsense, like unwanted harassment via PM's. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scriminal · 2020-09-17 13:15 Well yeah and remember that unless someone has really gone out of their way, even server admins can't see PMs to moderate them if they wanted to. /ignore and /umode +g are free and easy though :). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techsan47 · 2020-09-17 13:22 Yeah,I meant if a user causing problems was reported to an OP, nothing would be done. Never did it myself because I figured it was pointless, but have seen other complain about it. However, go "idle" for a couple of mins to take a phone call or something, and some OP will kick you. Great way to encourage discourse on a chan -- and people wonder why nobody chats ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scriminal · 2020-09-17 13:27 Making your own channel is also free and easy :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-09-18 13:28 [deleted]
