How to change primary nickname with NickServ on an IRC server? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-09-11 01:26 So I want to change my primary nickname on an account I hold on an IRC server. I know how to add new nicks to the account via the /msg NickServ group command but how do I change the primary nick (the main one under that particular account)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Equinoxdawg · 2020-09-11 02:17 If the network is using Atheme, you can do that with [SET ACCOUNTNAME] (https://github.com/atheme/atheme/wiki/NickServ%3ASET%3AACCOUNTNAME): `/msg nickserv set accountname groupedNick` I'm not sure how to do it with anope or other variants. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2020-09-11 02:48 /msg nickserv help ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-09-11 04:42 don't bother commenting next time please. That's just about as good a help as telling me too look it up on a search engine ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Elojen · 2020-09-11 07:36 /ns set accountname on freenode its /ns set display or something /ns help set ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2020-09-11 07:48 The problem is it depends entirely upon what nickserv the network is using. There is no real standardised nickserv and even then two networks running the same nickserv might have different features enabled or configured differently. The parent post is actually possibly more helpful than the others in this thread, without having any further context it provides you the tools to find the information you need. We don't know if you knew that command existed or not. Also, don't be rude to someone who has taken time to respond to your question, even if you don't value their response. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- htepO · 2020-09-11 08:32 LameBMX is not wrong. The first thing you should do is RTFM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-09-11 13:19 I do believe I was quite polite actually. However with your context, there being no real standardized nickserv commands, it becomes much more helpful, so thanks for your addition. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-09-11 13:22 As if I didn't search for the answer before posting. Link us to the manual then. Of course there isn't one because as OMGItsCheezWTF delineated there isn't any standardized nickserv commands, they're different for every server oftentimes. With that context in mind LameBMX's reply makes much more sense. Without it it came off as rude elitism as does your call to RTFM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- htepO · 2020-09-11 13:35 Given that there is no OneTrueNickServ™ and that nobody here can read your mind, maybe you should lead with the name of the network or the name of the services package being used. Your best bets are always the IRC network's help channel(s) and/or its website's help/knowledge base/support section. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-09-11 13:36 It's a tiny network, I should have just asked the admin but I didn't know there were different commands at the time ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I-am-fun-at-parties · 2020-09-11 13:51 > Link us to the manual then. Unfortunately there's no way to link to IRC messages, but you can obtain the fucking manual using /msg Nickserv HELP. I wonder why this hasn't been suggested yet. Oh wait, it has. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-09-11 14:00 Oh come on now. You've ignored completely what I've said only to insult me. What a great example you make ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I-am-fun-at-parties · 2020-09-11 14:04 What I did was point out the irony of replying "[give me] the manual" to a comment that literally produces the manual when copypasted into an IRC client. Where did you see me insulting you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-09-11 14:05 go elsewhere ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I-am-fun-at-parties · 2020-09-11 14:09 That's what I thought. I'll just chalk it up to general insecurity, then. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-09-11 14:11 weak. keep trying you fool ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PM__YOUR_DMCA_CLAIMS · 2020-09-11 14:25 /nick thisismynewname /msg NickServ REGISTER thisismynew@email.com thisismynewpassword Also check your attitude ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-09-11 14:27 check yours buddy. That doesn't do what I asked that creates a new one it doesn't replace the primary nick on an already existing account ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2020-09-11 14:33 Its been a while since I've been on IRC. But what I remember, all that would have actually been the most kind hearted convo one could have on IRC. The real IRC convo would have been; RTFM n00b /mode +m MaximumBus /kick Maximum us /onjoin MaximumBus /mode +m MaximumBus & /kick MaximumBus "RTFM n00b" I actually had that scripted to just be /rtfm maximumbus ---------------------------------------------------------------------- htepO · 2020-09-11 14:52 Alright, fair enough. If your netadmins are free to talk, they might very well be your best source of info. If you see yourself staying on this small network, reading up on the IRCd and services might go a long way. Why ask an oper when you can be an oper, eh? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- villagermd · 2020-09-11 15:31 You should ask from admins to delete your current nick from server and re-register. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-09-12 08:32 that's probably the best way thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-09-12 08:34 thanks for the help ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-09-12 08:37 you wish. IRC guys are too lonely to kick me perpetually ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2020-09-12 15:38 Onjoin + idle
