What to do in case of connectivity issues? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-09-05 08:15 I'm relatively new to IRC hence am having difficulty finding my way about. But one thing that keeps bugging me is the issue of disconnection. The place where I live right now has a very shitty internet connection that is very weak. I usually use this [https://webchat.freenode.net/](https://webchat.freenode.net/) portal for accessing my favorite channels. The thing is, if my internet experiences a disruption, I have no option but to login once again from scratch. This causes a lot of hassle as the chat is then completely erased and set clean. I can't see the messages in which I've been tagged or the avalanche of chats that had taken place during my time- out. How do I deal with this? It would be very nice if the interface worked like that of Telegram/Whatsapp desktop applications, wherein the volley of messages get paused if connection falters, and one can view (the already sent ) messages offline too. Further, once the connection is reestablished, you can continue as if nothing had ever happened. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UpvotePuffin · 2020-09-05 09:08 You need a standalone IRC client and some sort of IRC bouncer service like znc running on a server or an IRCCloud account. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _m242_ · 2020-09-05 13:02 A simple solution, if you are comfortable with the command line is to run [weechat](https://weechat.org) or [irssi](https://irssi.org) on a server in a [tmux](https://github.com/tmux/tmux/wiki) session, and to connect to it via ssh, so that if your connection breaks, you won't lose anything. It's a simple solution that works great, but it has it's limitations too. You could also use a [bouncer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BNC_(software) like [ZNC](https://znc.in) that would allow you to connect to irc from almost any client, but sadly freenode's webchat only connects to freenode, so you would have either to use another client like [hexchat](https://hexchat.github.io/) or weechat. edit: fixing formatting ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scriminal · 2020-09-05 15:56 Except don't use irccloud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- figboot_dev · 2020-09-05 20:40 Agree, it is much more flexible to host your own ZNC. It is also quite reasonable as far as price. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scriminal · 2020-09-05 21:46 Irccloud specifically is.... problematic ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrelcee · 2020-09-06 07:45 +1 for ZNC here. Can be a little tricky to set up and it does way more than many people including me need.. but you control it and no company will be able to have any sway over you. You do need a server on a good internet connection though. A $5 digital ocean vm with any Unix on it will be more than enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UpvotePuffin · 2020-09-06 11:20 Thought I should add that I currently use Quassel for my client and overall love it. It runs a core on a server and a client that talks to the core on your desktop or devices. Pretty easy to setup and does away with some annoying buffer playback stuff I was getting with znc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrelcee · 2020-09-07 04:48 The tech behind quassel seems good but I could never get past the UI...
