Are there any good free IRCs? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TranquilSoldier · 2020-08-21 23:21 Just wondering if the free IRCs are any good, are the worth using? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gilligvroom · 2020-08-21 23:26 Are you asking if any of the free IRC Clients are any good? I will assume then that you are on Windows? If so - AdiIRC I quite like! Great customization - good themes built in - good set of features. I run a network and find it great for that. On linux, I use irssi or WeeChat depending on my needs that day. Does that help? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cronyx · 2020-08-22 17:28 I second AdiIRC. I think mIRC is still my favorite, but that's likely nostalgia. Adi has a ton of great features. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gilligvroom · 2020-08-22 17:58 I was tempted to mention mIRC as well but it's not strictly "free" if you're going by the letter of the license, haha. I actually did buy a license a month ago with no intent to use it just as a thank-you to Khaled for getting me interested in writing administrative automation scripts :P ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jhthorsen · 2020-08-23 00:39 If you have a server, you can set up https://convos.chat to get a nice looking web app/client and a persistent connection to your favorite IRC server. There’s also a tutorial on how to set it up on DigitalOcean. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sloppy-svetlana · 2020-08-23 16:50 If you're looking for a really active tech community and can handle a bunch of shitposting, check out `#gnulag` on [`irc.snoonet.org`](https://irc.snoonet.org). You need to be auth'd with NickServ and connected over SSL. Bear in mind that they've got a no lurking policy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Toastee480 · 2020-08-25 20:52 I would recommend Quassel. Provided you have somewhere to run the core 24/7, the convenience of the core system is super nice, especially since the mobile client is actually good. One caveat is it doesn't support DCC (yet) but other than that it's a great client, especially if you plan on using irc on multiple machines. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cactuskitties · 2020-08-31 19:56 if youre talking about clients, i know nothing about the technicalities of irc lmao but i use hexchat and its alright and free. if you have a mac though i'd recommend textual. it says its a "free trial", but i used textual for years and never had to pay anything if youre talking about cool channels, you can play werewolf (mafia) with us in ##werewolf :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mcpcpc · 2020-09-26 19:08 A little late to the game, but i am a pretty big fan of the Suckless client, [sic](https://tools.suckless.org/sic/). It’s pretty minimal, but gets the job done and forces you to learn the IRC protocol. Otherwise, i have been working on my own IRC client implementation, [kirc](https://github.com/mcpcpc/kirc) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sorcerer420 · 2021-02-01 17:45 i paid for an mirc license before i jumped ship to linux too lol
