I made an IRC server on my raspberry pi. It's currently tailored for armchair philosophers and techies to help 'solve all the worlds problems.' AKA it's just for some fun talk :) A link to the website I made for it (hosted on the same Pi) is below: reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DogmaDog · 2020-08-08 23:06 Please post link. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nicrazac · 2020-08-08 23:07 https://www.cosmoscript.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I-am-fun-at-parties · 2020-08-08 23:45 > :CosmoScript.irc 002 doqwjidqw :Your host is CosmoScript.irc[0.0.0.0/6667] Finally proof that the entire internet is, in fact, running on u/nicrazac's raspi. I've always suspected it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-08-08 23:45 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nicrazac · 2020-08-09 00:41 *Insert the astronauts in space meme: "Its all a rasp pi server" *points gun "Always has been" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dancorbe · 2020-08-09 06:48 Downvoted for lack of IPv6 connectivity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Maybe_IDontKnow · 2020-08-09 18:19 i keep getting Connection failed ((336031996) error:140770FC:SSL ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cities7 · 2020-08-10 11:45 no one is there ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nicrazac · 2020-08-10 12:02 I login periodically, cant live there I guess. I've only told reddit about it so it's very new. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cities7 · 2020-08-10 12:02 yeah I saw you ping me when you get on ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nicrazac · 2020-08-10 13:13 For sure! What's your nick? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cities7 · 2020-08-10 13:13 the only one online won't be hard to find me lol. cities ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kuya-D · 2020-08-10 19:54 Ipv6 is not always simple. Ya you can tunnel but whats the point. I believe my vps is configured for ipv6 but i don't login Nomore as its only 4 of us. Lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dancorbe · 2020-08-10 20:33 We've been out of IPv4 address space for more than two years already. It's no longer acceptable for a service to be connected to the Internet without IPv6 support. You're just contributing to a problem which is eventually going to disenfranchise people. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eager-to-learn · 2020-08-11 01:56 Do you mind explaining how did you managed to get your IRC server open to the internet? I also have been trying to make an IRC server on my raspberry pi but mine only works on my home network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nicrazac · 2020-08-11 02:07 Hi, I just missed you on the irc! And all you have to do is login to your router at home and find where you can configure port forwarding. Once you find that you have to forward traffic on port 6667 to your public up address via the TCP option. You can google what your public ip is. Then you just update your .conf file on the pi to your public ip and then you should be good to go. If you want it to be named something instead of just an ip address (like mine is named CosmoScript) you have to buy a domain name from a dns service like namecheap or godaddy or something like that and then in the dns settings you can point the domain name to your public ip address. So then the connection would be /6667 instead of /6667. The main problem with all of this is that you likely have a dynamic public ip address, like me and like most home networks who dont pay extra for a static one. What this means is that occasionally, maybe like once a year or so your ISP may change your public ip so that any unsolicited servers automatically go down. All you have to do is update your servers and your DNS settings to point at the new public ip, but if you're away for a while or something then the servers could be down for a while. This is another reason why a domain name is handy though because then your users dont have to adapt to the new public ip since once you point the domain name to the new ip, your users still only have to know the domain name. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eager-to-learn · 2020-08-11 08:32 Thanks! I was looking for this and since IRC is not so popular nowadays I couldn’t find something useful. I will definitely go for the domain name.
