IRC pain points and I am really stuck. Help please. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TridenRake · 2020-07-25 11:38 This is not a rant. I love IRC and I have been using it for over a year now. But compared to cloud chat alternatives (the closed source ones like slack and telegram) IRC is really a pain to use sometimes. Here are the scenarios and I'd like if there are solutions that can solve these problems. 1. I am in a channel, asking questions. My unstable internet disconnects. I reconnect.... and any responses in the interim are gone. 2. Uploading pics, pasting code, attaching files, all require me to open different services like imgur, pastebin, and dropbox to do this. It soon becomes a cluster of tabs and services to keep track off and delete or manage the files later or in the long run. 3. And popular IRC networks like freenode use a common spam database that often bans the dynamically allocated IP that my ISP cycles in my country. Only after two or three restarts I get lucky to get connected. 4. I am on the go and I'll need to continue the conversation on my phone. With telegram or slack, I can do that, but as of now with IRC I am unable to do that. Again, this is not a rant. I am just hoping if there are plugins or solutions that already exist for this use case. Suggestions would help me huge and save a lot of time for me. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- L-555-BAT · 2020-07-25 12:08 Take a look an IRC bouncer such as ZNC. [https://wiki.znc.in/Introduction](https://wiki.znc.in/Introduction) I use one on a cheap Digital Ocean droplet. Instead of connecting to the IRC server you connect to the bouncer which stays connected to the IRC server when you disconnect from it. You can view missed chats when you reconnect to the bouncer and it’ll use one static IP address all of the time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theLJR · 2020-07-25 12:09 I can try and answer your questions 1. If you lose connection to the server you will not see any answers to a question no way around that. 2. If you want to send files irc has DCC transfers its easy to do. I wont even get into what a XDCC channel is for but file transfers are the main thing I use irc for. 3. I know several servers mass G-line IP ranges due to being associated with spam or DDOS attacks and so forth again I dont think anyway around it. 4. There are options to install a irc client on android i have used some in the past just google it. Hope this helps good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TridenRake · 2020-07-25 13:09 I can do this to mitigate loss of context as I already have a few servers for my projects. Thanks. Didn't know about this until today. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TridenRake · 2020-07-25 13:11 I didn't know about XDCC. I will look into that. For 1, I think what /u/L-555-BAT suggested would work. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- htepO · 2020-07-25 14:30 1. A bouncer that can replay messages can help. 2. A service known as IRCCloud could help with all of this. 3. Again, IRCCloud. They seem to have tie-ups with most major networks. 4. See above. I am not affiliated with IRCCloud in any way. It is simply a free service I have used from time to time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TridenRake · 2020-07-25 15:13 IRCCloud looks promising. I will check this out. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2020-07-25 20:26 I know you're not ranting per se, and these are just pain points but I'm just trying to give context. IRC predates the web by 3 years, and public adoption of it by about 6 years, the idea of multiple types of media being available on one online service was not really around then, the closest thing would have been gopher, but IRC predates that by 3 years, too. The protocol was designed to be lightweight over almost all other considerations. IRC does actually support file transfers using a protocol extension called DCC, which is actually peer to peer! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-07-25 23:04 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- P4k3 · 2020-07-27 20:47 And if you want a selfhosted variant of that [https://thelounge.chat/](https://thelounge.chat/)
