Diff between Weechat relay and znc/bouncer reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arnauldb · 2020-06-14 10:59 Hello, What are the differences between Weechat as a relay on my sever and using znc/a bouncer from a znc provider? What is the best way to hide my IP (I have a server connected to a vpn provider and installed weechat relay on this server). If I use a znc provider, can I connect my weechat relay to it? Is it something to do? Thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sim642 · 2020-06-14 11:07 WeeChat's IRC relay is more basic than what ZNC offers. WeeChat's IRC relay isn't intended as a full-blown bouncer, especially because it has its own relay protocol as well for apps like weechat-android or glowing-bear. Yes, you can just connect WeeChat to ZNC like a normal IRC server and that's it. Then you can use WeeChat relay to access the whole thing as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arnauldb · 2020-06-14 12:41 Ok, so if I understand well, I can connect my weechat relay (which is on my server, server connected to a vpn with static adress) to a znc provider. Then, I connect from a client to my weechat relay. Is there any benefits comparing to having my client connect directly to a znc provider without having a weechat relay on my server in the middle? Do you know of secured znc provider (good reputation, no logs (if any), payment (if paid) via crypto or free? Thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sim642 · 2020-06-14 12:54 If you'll have a ZNC provider, I don't really see the point of using another WeeChat IRC relay in the middle. Why not connect straight to ZNC with your local client? And if you don't have a fixed ZNC provider, then you could just run ZNC on your server yourself. An alternative approach could be to cut out all middle men (both ZNC and WeeChat IRC relay) and run WeeChat terminal client on your server and SSH into the server to use it. You're overcomplicating things for no obvious reason. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arnauldb · 2020-06-15 09:34 >If you'll have a ZNC provider, I don't really see the point of using another WeeChat IRC relay in the middle. Ok, that's what I thought too. Thank you. >run WeeChat terminal client on your server and SSH into the server to use it. You mean starting Weechat (not as a relay) directly on the server and connecting to it via ssh? Actually I use the Weechat-Android app on my mobile phone and it is quite handy. I am afraid I won't be able to connect to Weechat from it if Weechat doesn't have a relay. If I am wrong, what are the differences between running Weechat on my server and connect to it via ssh and running Weechat as a relay on my server and connect to it via ssh (or via the Android app)? If similar what is the point of having a Weechat relay? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sim642 · 2020-06-15 15:40 The relay is just a WeeChat plugin. If you run WeeChat on your server, you can both SSH into it to use the terminal interface _and_ connect using weechat-android. The latter is just more convenient than using an SSH client and a terminal on a phone screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Merlincool · 2020-08-19 11:42 This is what I am using currently, but I want to run hexchat and my hexchat connects to my znc properly but do not read old chats. While my weechat android which is using weechat relay is good to go with older messages everytime I connect. How to do this in hexchat.
