Best login method for IRC reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-06-01 21:51 SASL? Server password? Nickserv? SASL doesn't seem to work on some servers? What is the best to hide your ip if your using a cloak and don't want it to peek out for other users to find? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-06-01 21:55 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2020-06-02 09:57 SASL if the network supports it. It's by far the most secure authentication mechanism. Server passwords next although I've never seen that actually used in an ircd for regular users, then finally nickserve style authentication is the least secure as it's easy to phish and relies on the protocol itself. IRC as a protocol is open by design. By default all users can see your full hostname. Many networks now take steps to mask your hostname or give the option to, but this should not be assumed or relied upon, and ircops can usually see the true hostname. If you wish to mask your true IP you should use a VPN or something too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I-am-fun-at-parties · 2020-06-02 11:07 > Server passwords next although I've never seen that actually used in an ircd for regular users It's not uncommon, e.g. on Freenode if you put your nickserv password as the server password, then you'll be authenticated with nickserv right away and also have the cloak applied immediately, so no awkward race condition where your joins come before the cloak. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2020-06-02 11:40 I wouldn't consider freenode typical, they're also the only network I've used in the last 30 years of being on IRC near daily that actually implemented SASL. To this day none of the 4 other IRC networks I use regularly have bothered. Hell, 2 of them don't even have TLS support. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arnauldb · 2020-06-03 21:30 You mean freenode is the only one implementing sasl? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2020-06-03 22:18 Only one I have encountered, yes. Doesn't mean others haven't just that I haven't encountered them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arnauldb · 2020-06-04 11:06 Same for me, I only use sasl on freenode.
