Cannot connect to IRC! What could be causing this? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AwsomeCatPunk · 2020-05-24 16:57 I have tried to connect to Freenode, Rizon, Spotchat, and GIMPnet but I could not connect to any one of them. How am I able to proceed to connect back to the network? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dijit · 2020-05-24 17:00 could be blocked on the network level. It would help enormously to provide the kind of error you get. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gandoon · 2020-05-24 17:08 I am connected to a European Rizon server and it is working fine, so no network-wide problems… Are you on a VPN? Many servers do block access from some exit nodes/IP ranges. If you are, you could try connecting to a different exit node. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AwsomeCatPunk · 2020-05-24 17:17 No I am not. I am just trying to connect over to the network. Nothing special. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AwsomeCatPunk · 2020-05-24 17:18 It is simply loading for an insane amount of time and never stops loading. I have switched clients from HexChat to Konversation and it is still not working. Your advice is reasonable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gandoon · 2020-05-24 17:28 Can you ping the servers you try to connect to and get an answer then? If they don't respond to ping then your problem is probably somewhere between you and the servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AwsomeCatPunk · 2020-05-24 17:32 Okay so here is what I got using Ping. PING irc.freenode.net(moon.freenode.net (2600:3c02::f03c:91ff:fe59:7d2e)) 56 data bytes. And it was only one line in the terminal! If I do the same for Rizon it also just does 56 data bytes. Could be the ISP's (Spectrum). But I can sill use KiwiIRC. Edit: whatsmyip.com does not detect my IPv6 address, this could also be the issue if the IPv6 address could be disabled. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jhoneycutt · 2020-05-24 17:36 Who provides your internet? IRC may be blocked on your end by the network administrator if you are, say, at work, or on a school campus. Try the web clients [Kiwi IRC](http://kiwiirc.com/) and/or [IRCCloud](https://www.irccloud.com/). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AwsomeCatPunk · 2020-05-24 17:37 Spectrum, I am currently at home. whatsmyip.com does not detect the IPv6 address. The IRC servers may want my IPv6 when it cannot be found. It is still kinda odd that the IPv6 is disabled. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gandoon · 2020-05-24 17:43 If you only get that "56 bytes" message, you are not getting through, you should get at least a few replies, like so: ping irc.freenode.net PING chat.freenode.net (130.185.232.126): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 130.185.232.126: icmp_seq=0 ttl=56 time=90.247 ms 64 bytes from 130.185.232.126: icmp_seq=1 ttl=56 time=113.003 ms … --- chat.freenode.net ping statistics --- 11 packets transmitted, 11 packets received, 0.0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 84.448/92.319/124.118/11.408 ms I would begin with disabling IPv6 on your machine, make sure you have an IPv4 address, and try it again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AwsomeCatPunk · 2020-05-24 18:45 No hope. Still refusing to connect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mindlesstux · 2020-05-24 19:30 Cli or putty, telnet chat.freenode.net 6667 If that connects then it's a firewall at the application level. If it fails, should get an error message. Also on spectrum here and have no issues. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AwsomeCatPunk · 2020-05-24 21:25 Okay so simply, it try's to load but refuse to connect. No error message, nothing. Just trys to load but it would load for infinity and not quit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- M1S1EK · 2020-05-25 01:45 Check your anti-virus first, they usually have policies on blocking IRC. Second, same thing with your modem/router, make sure the ports are not blocked for IRC. If it works with KiwiIRC, it means the issue is on your end. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I-am-fun-at-parties · 2020-05-25 05:20 Your best bet would be to run wireshark to capture your network traffic, so you (or we) can take a look on what's actually happening at the protocol level. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AwsomeCatPunk · 2020-05-25 16:27 I just found out that if I leave it loading for 5 minutes the IRC will load up! But 5 minutes is too long. I think I should wait a few more days and if it still takes too long I will continue to troubleshoot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cool_Finger_4214 · 2023-11-08 19:08 Hey, I had the same problem so was google a solution when i just tried the setting in irssi >**perl\_use\_lib** I just did >**/set perl\_use\_lib on** *Then i just could connect to any server.* *pure luck!* Best Regards # // h ko [https://hko.nu](https://hko.nu) \- Total Ad free, Reg Free, INSTANT URL SHORTENER!
