local IRC for roomates. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr__Waffles · 2020-05-17 03:25 I am not sure if IRC is even the right way to go, but i would like to start a local server or perhaps channel for me and my housemates to use. I downloaded limechat and realized i have no idea what im doing. i used to IRC as a kid and i completely forgot. If anyone can help that would be rad thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HumansAreRobots · 2020-05-17 03:31 Your best bet would be to check out an existing network, you can see user counts for multiple networks on a site like netsplit.de ([https:/ /netsplit.de/networks/top10.php](https://netsplit.de/networks/top10.ph p)) As for personal recommendations I pretty much exclusively use [Snoonet](https://snoonet.org) and [freenode](https://freenode.net) (you can see details on connecting to them and registering a channel on their websites. Snoonet is geared more towards general conversation while freenode has a lot of technical/computer related channels and project channels. If you have more specific questions feel free to ask. There's quite a few helpful people that frequent this subreddit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skoot66 · 2020-05-17 03:44 Discord ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubdos · 2020-05-17 08:02 Discord is a disaster for personal communication. In extenso, it's a disaster. If you must steer away from IRC, use Matrix. Matrix can be bridged to IRC too, easily. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2020-05-17 08:20 You can't assert something so widely used is a disaster without saying why. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubdos · 2020-05-17 08:27 True! My bad. Unlike IRC or Matrix, both Discord and Slack do not allow self- hosting, federation, or choice of clients. They misleadingly call their 'private' groups "servers". They also call them private, however they do not offer any e2e encryption. Matrix and IRC are protocols developed in the open, Discord and Slack are single companies. The latter means you're putting your data in specific private hands, the former means you still get to pick which hands they fall in, if not your own. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2020-05-17 08:40 Right, but all of that is subjective. It's only a problem if you give a shit, not a "disaster" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Keterz · 2020-05-17 09:29 Subjective, yea. Forget about your privacy haha. Services like these are a disaster for those who care about their data. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2020-05-17 09:32 Right, but most don't. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-05-17 10:16 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2020-05-17 10:28 Downvoted for telling the truth. Disagree if you will but the vast majority of people give no thought to their privacy online. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scriminal · 2020-05-17 11:35 Just literally go on any network (efnet, freenode, whatever), /join #drwafflesplace and then tell your roomates about it. Maybe do a chanmode +k and only tell them the key to keep randos out. It's that easy :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- M1S1EK · 2020-05-17 13:36 Your more than welcome to join my network irc.AddictIRC.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaximumBus · 2020-05-17 14:05 Signal or wire maybe? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Keterz · 2020-05-17 14:18 Majority of people are heterosexual, yet everyone is concerned about LGBTQ+ community. (Yep, probably bad example. But, you know, quite an easy-to-understand one) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubdos · 2020-05-17 14:50 You got something to read about that for me? I am actually using it, so that's interesting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubdos · 2020-05-17 14:50 For one-on-one comms, Signal is the simplest one if you both have phones. I'm not sure about Wire. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-05-17 17:52 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubdos · 2020-05-17 18:29 Thanks! Sounds like these are mostly implementation-related issues and not fundamental issues, so that's something. I guess I'll see when it breaks on my channels. Thanks for the heads up! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- earthrock3r · 2020-05-26 17:34 Feel free to use our server.
