Is connecting via tor required for security? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ujasd8731ejksc0n32cq · 2020-04-28 11:30 I feel kind of worried knowing that my IP is exposed to random strangers. Do you use tor or some other proxy? Or just a cloak? Not sure if I should start connecting through tor but I'd have to get a new nick since my ip is probably logged somewhere which would destroy the anonymity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- leshoop · 2020-04-28 11:42 you can try it but a lot of servers ban tor connections. a vpn would work best if you have one. change your ident as well if you decide to change your nick. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techman- · 2020-04-28 12:20 Whether your IP address is exposed to end-users is entirely up to what network you are connecting on. Most networks offer host cloaking by default, meaning your IP address is hidden from regular users, but still visbible to server operators. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ujasd8731ejksc0n32cq · 2020-04-28 12:33 >a lot of servers ban tor connections. I checked for the servers I use and they all have a .onion address. I don't think vpns are good for anything actually so I'd like to not use one. Thanks for reminding me of the ident, didn't think of it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ujasd8731ejksc0n32cq · 2020-04-28 12:35 Sure but some networks that I use don't provide cloaks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techman- · 2020-04-28 12:41 If that's the case, you're going to need to use some kind of bouncer or proxy to conceal your IP. Or, use a VPN. The thing about Tor is that it is often used to abuse IRC networks, so it will often be gated or blocked outright. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ujasd8731ejksc0n32cq · 2020-04-28 12:55 If anyone else is interested in the topic, I found [https://www.irchel p.org/security/privacy.html](https://www.irchelp.org/security/privacy. html) which looks like a great sumup ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dijit · 2020-04-28 15:47 ^ this is the right answer. My network blocks tor but we have our own hidden service which is connected to the network. This is an increased barrier for those who want to abuse. (although we still can't prevent abuse fully). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Modern_Doshin · 2020-04-28 20:30 Tor being secure haha ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ujasd8731ejksc0n32cq · 2020-04-28 20:44 I don't think I could bother someone so much that he risks his job at the NSA just to get my IP in order to dos me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Modern_Doshin · 2020-04-28 20:52 I was just saying that Tor is unsecured ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ujasd8731ejksc0n32cq · 2020-04-28 20:58 I agree but I think as long as I am not commiting a really bad crime I am safe enough. But that is just my thoughts, may of course be very different for people in countries with heavy censorship edit: autocorrect made "love" out oulf whatever I typed that should originally be "thoughts" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Modern_Doshin · 2020-04-28 21:20 How about not commit crimes on Tor....just saying ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ujasd8731ejksc0n32cq · 2020-04-28 21:23 That's what I was trying to say my dude ---------------------------------------------------------------------- leshoop · 2020-04-28 23:53 > my love, may of course be very different for people in countries with heavy censorship yikes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- teh_maxh · 2020-08-07 05:18 > I don't think vpns are good for anything actually so I'd like to not use one. VPNs are definitely overblown for security in general, but for this specific case, they do what you want.
