Why can other users simply just grab your IP address? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-04-06 01:05 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DRW_ · 2020-04-06 01:11 If the server is showing your IP address, then it’s badly configured. All modern IRCds support host masks by default. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2020-04-06 01:33 You could always use a free znc/shell, self host, or whatever. Someone could get your IP on discord if you go clicking a random link that connects back to that persons server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2020-04-06 01:35 >If the server is showing your IP address, then it’s badly configured. Um, no. That really depends on the network. DALnet, EFNet, freenode, EsperNet, OFTC, and others all by default show your IP address. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-04-06 01:38 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-04-06 01:41 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2020-04-06 01:57 >Well freenode leaks my IP address freenode does not leak. Its not hidden so it has nothing to leak. >i also haven't seen any other server that does this automatically so far either. See the other networks I mentioned above? >Flat out a service should never leak your IP address to peers, Not leaking, since its not hidden. >i have no idea why people don't see this as a genuine issue when anyone can just figure out your general locationand DDoS your internet connection Congrats, you live in Oklahoma. Who cares? Why would some random person want to DDoS you? If you are paranoid you could just use a free bouncer/shell/whatever. freenode offers a hidden tor services, https://freenode.net/kb/answer/chat#accessing-freenode-via-tor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2020-04-06 01:59 Like you do realize IRC is just a very short time younger than email? Everything is based upon what the server wants to do with its usage of the IRC protocol vs the clients that connect to it. I dont think I have ever heard of an update to the protocol itself, probably can still connect to an irc server using telnet. IRC is like plan 9, something to play with and learn. Oh, and in case you didnt catch it, IRC is the protocol, not the service. TCP/IP exposes your ip address all over, why u no gripe about that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cities7 · 2020-04-06 02:02 I think you should use discord if that's what suits you. People will use what they like. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-04-06 03:10 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-04-06 03:14 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-04-06 03:18 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2020-04-06 03:53 At work we reserve IRC for use in emergencies, because it relies on 0 other infrastructure other than the network itself. It reveals everyone's IPs yes but it's just everyone's workstations anyway, which is hardly secret. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- earthrock3r · 2020-04-06 04:19 Not all irc servers expose your ip. For instance irc.robothive.org automatically masks your ip ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dheatov · 2020-04-06 04:48 I understand. However, your ip is exposed to people behind the server, e.g. freenode sysadmin, regardless of masking or not, and you should not trust them more than any stranger on irc. If you're worried about that, you should try ro hide yourself from all people, do your best assuming the network is compromised, use VPN or bouncing or whatever. Apart from that, DDoSing is expensive (try starting one yourself), and using that expensive thing on a random stranger on the net? Not worthy. You can easily obtain another address by making a call to your ISP, or even by simply reseting your router. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- evilgold · 2020-04-06 05:56 Your ip address isn't a secret. If you have concerns about something people could do with your ip then you should address those issues directly (IE get a better firewall, use a VPN) rather than expecting services to hide it for you automatically. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2020-04-06 06:03 >Just wanted to address this first, i don't know if this was supposed to be a dox attempt but you are way off, I was being sarcastic and I randomly picked a US state. I'll give that one a pass. >might have to contact the staff of this sub about that. No. I do know a few of them on various IRC networks, but I have not spoken with any of them in the past few months. >You couldn't get any of my info, but just letting you know attempting it alone doesn't only break rules for a lot of online services but is illegal depending on the extent, i recommend you try though, give me a reason to fire back. And where did you get your law degree? University of American Samoa? (Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul reference). >Nope, wrong, it is a leak of an IP address Not a leak if its not hidden by default. How many times do I need to explain this? >So you're essentially admitting a ton of IRC servers... I'm not admitting anything. I'm just stating facts. BREAKING NEWS: WATER IS WET. >Again, wrong, same as my first reply, residential IP addresses are vulnerable to amplified ddos attacks and literally anyone could pull it off anonymously, it is a leak. Who is going to DDoS you and why? Are you even worth the effort? >This page is outdated, they actually do not offer Works fine for me (tested 10 minutes ago). Maybe you missed something.... Idiot proof directions for WeeChat: https://szorfein.github.io/weechat/tor/configure-weechat/ >outright block every exit node that attempts to connect I said "freenode offers a hidden tor services,..." you must have missed that part. It is basically "social media vendor lock-in", a bit like facebook messenger, snapchat, or whatever people use these days. AIM (aol) / MSN / Yahoo / MySpace (back in the day, I used that stuff). Those force you to use their closed sourced proprietary programs just to talk with other people. Or they might force you to be logged in from some bloated electron app or your browser. IRC you have 600 (src: netsplit.de) or so networks that you can connect to. Don't like one network? Connect to another one! Don't like your IRC client? Pick another one! You have multiple IRC clients to pick. Don't like the ones that exist? You can make one. Good luck trying that with facebook messenger or whatever people use these days. https://netsplit.de/networks/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vendor_lock-in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_Relay_Chat_client s ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-04-06 08:30 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2020-04-06 09:36 >This is the same with different discord servers. No, you are missing the entire point on that. Discord is THE VENDOR, every server/room/whatever in that is dependent on Discord itself, ergo "social media vendor lock-in". You cannot self-host your own privately run discord server. You need to use their website/software and connect directly into them. IRC is different. ANYONE can host an IRC server almost anywhere. IRC as a whole has no single owner. I can run my own private IRC server on my own hardware. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- data0x0 · 2020-04-06 09:54 Not a "lock-in", you are choosing to use the service, doesn't matter if you're not able to host your own physical server, discord handles that for you free of charge. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2020-04-06 11:31 IRC and Plan 9 are frigging awesome. That's why you are getting the downvotes. Or maybe because you are the definition of a troll. Why join /r/IRC if you think its crap? TCP/IP does nothing to protect your IP address. It's a protocol. The servers and services protect you IP from other visitors. I guarantee you, whoever owns that server can run netstat and see your IP address.(or VPN address) Unless you have a botnet (or whatever they are called now) performing a ddos on another user is very ineffective solo. Back when cable was a thing, cable internet could drop a dialup user fast enough they knew what happened. But that was about it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- evilgold · 2020-04-06 18:17 Have at it hoss: 97.115.248.219 Like I said, not a secret and I highly doubt you have the means or ability to ddos me but good luck. I'll let ya know if I notice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-04-07 02:57 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- evilgold · 2020-04-07 04:04 I don't really use irc much anymore to be honest. I used to need it for work but everyone has moved on to other things. It is in fact my ip address, if you want I can open a port for you, dm me a random number and I'll run an http server on it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-04-07 05:10 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- evilgold · 2020-04-07 05:34 Yeah I'm really not worried about it, ddos attacks are pretty ineffective these days and there is nothing to gain by doing it against a residential ip address, if it affected me at all (and that's a big IF) if just reboot my modem and have a new ip address assigned by my isp. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-04-07 06:43 [deleted]
