No-one ever talks? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 03:28 Hey Reddit, I assume that it's just because I'm bad at looking for rooms, but every single room I join is full of people yet no-one ever speaks. I have only ever spoken to one person and that was ages ago. Can someone tell me why people just leave themselves connected but don't speak? Is there a way to find active rooms? Cheers, NukerCola ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Asriel_Belacqua · 2020-03-31 03:56 What are you interested in? Freenode has quite a few active channels as do a few other networks I'm on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 04:09 Technology and the likes – what else? If you could suggest some channels/networks I'd bust my vest. I'm pretty new to IRC, I've had a shot at hosting one locally for some pals at school, and that went well but I've had pretty much no experience in the wider world of IRC. Cheers! NukerCola ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Asriel_Belacqua · 2020-03-31 04:25 Freenode #freebsd ##linux #ubuntu #archlinux #openbsd are all pretty active for starting points. I'll list some more later in bed atm ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-03-31 04:34 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 04:35 Thank you Mx. Asriel! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 04:36 Thank you Mx. Nobody! How do you do the large text by the way?? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Abstrct · 2020-03-31 04:48 Dammit, both responders missed an awesome opportunity to make /r/irc just as idly as the real thing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rainbownerdsgirl · 2020-03-31 04:49 Those aren’t people they are bots ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 06:11 I'm sure that u/nobodynbdy is a bot but I'm not sure about u/Asriel_Belacqua. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 06:13 Surely there are some communities that are somewhat active? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nucular_ · 2020-03-31 06:28 This highly depends on the channel culture, but from my experience, IRC tends to be more like a public-ish whatsapp group than a place you explicitly visit to chat /right now/. Most people in my home channel either work using their computers or have technical hobbies, and they let IRC run in the background, checking it for activity from time to time. Maybe somebody shares an interesting link or starts ranting about their lifes or something. Once you hang out enough in a channel and participate in some banter the people there might warm up to you and start pinging you about random stuff, and you'll do the same. That's how low-activity channels work. So essentially you just need to find the right channel, preferably one that already matches your interests, and stay around. Read the vibes. Maybe try striking up a conversation. Just please don't leave immediately because people took more than 10 seconds to answer, and don't assume that you're the center of attention. Oh also many people use a bouncer to connect to IRC, which keeps them logged in when they're away. This tends to artificially inflate user counts by a lot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- QuasiLamp · 2020-03-31 06:52 Hell yeah ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 06:56 Awesome, thanks! Sounds good! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-03-31 07:58 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nobodynbdy · 2020-03-31 08:45 I actually have no idea lol it just came out like that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sim642 · 2020-03-31 08:48 Welcome to IRC! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 08:49 Huh, weird. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 08:50 Thank you, I’ve just found some good conversations so I’m having a good experience right now :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dijit · 2020-03-31 09:36 There are many, but IRC is fragmented. I maintain an IRC network ( ircs://irc.darkscience.net/darkscience ) and the lobby averages around 2,500 lines a day which is fairly active as far as IRC channels are concerned. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MachaHack · 2020-03-31 10:19 It's probably unintentional. Starting a line on reddit with `#` makes it bold, but `#whatever` is also the formatting of IRC channels. e.g. \#HelloWorld becomes #HelloWorld ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeuroG · 2020-03-31 14:04 Keep in mind that lots of channels are basically tech support for a particular project or group, meaning they won't typically have 24/7 banter. Other channels may only be active at a particular time. Keep looking, and don't disconnect when no one answers you. They may answer later and you will find out when people are on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Asriel_Belacqua · 2020-03-31 15:29 Sorry I'm a person. I comment a variety of things in various subreddits and hopefully make more sense than a robot ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zachary_DuBois · 2020-03-31 15:31 Don't forget. A lot of people might not actually be there. A lot of people use bouncers so they don't miss anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 21:50 Yeah I thought you were a person. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 21:50 Okay, thanks :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 21:51 Huh, thanks :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-03-31 21:51 Okay cool, thanks :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Seirdy · 2020-03-31 23:07 Even so, there are plenty of active channels. See the readme of my [chattiest-channels](https://git.sr.ht/~seirdy/chattiest-channels) script for some examples. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- peterjpeters · 2020-04-01 00:34 Channel #hfzone on irc.snoonet.org is very active. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-04-01 00:46 Cheers! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Enfors · 2020-04-01 00:54 Last time I visited the #reddit channel on Freenode, it was pretty active. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-04-01 04:32 I’ll check it out, thanks :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nobodynbdy · 2020-04-03 23:18 Why are you so sure I am a bot? Lol 🤦‍♂️ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-04-03 23:33 Your only post and comments are about the same IRC server... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nobodynbdy · 2020-04-05 15:47 do you usually have full on conversations with bots and they respond to you? That's maybe doable. But why are you talking to a bot? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-04-05 22:04 Whoa cat, slow down! I’m not meaning to get angry, based on he facts I made an assumption, that’s all! Now I know more facts and can rethink my position. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stamour547 · 2020-04-10 17:03 I've been sitting on #archlinux-newbie lately ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ntsurertnw · 2020-04-11 20:50 Try irc.axon.pw - #axon #finance #sweetspot to babe a few channels. We have stay at home mothers to I.T people. We're just a large group of people who have stayed in touch and just hang out in IRC. No doxing it other stupid stuff going on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NukerCola · 2020-04-11 22:23 Awesome ! Thanks for your help.
