What irc client do you guys use? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kapitanluffy · 2020-02-26 13:52 I'm curious what client you guys use. I have used mIRC and Hexchat. I just wanna know what are clients are out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zodman · 2020-02-26 14:21 Bitchx Irssi are popular by cli ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theor · 2020-02-26 14:35 Running Weechat on my server with a selfhosted version of [Glowing Bear](https://www.glowing-bear.org/) for easier use on my phone. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TurnipZombie · 2020-02-26 14:39 irssi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poisomike87 · 2020-02-26 15:14 irssi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pedz · 2020-02-26 15:24 Used XChat for years. Switched to HexChat a few years ago and now I'm testing The Lounge and I like it. The Lounge has URL preview so I get previews for images, GIFs, MP3s, titles of webpages and stuff like that. Plus, push notifications through Chrome on Android, and an app for Chrome too. And it can act as a bouncer. I thought going on a web page would get tiresome but the Chrome app makes a separate window so it's not lost in a tab somewhere in my browser. So far it "modernizes" my experience on IRC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tbaruchel · 2020-02-26 15:26 Epic5 + Amnesiac ---------------------------------------------------------------------- apetresc · 2020-02-26 15:38 Weechat connecting to a self-hosted ZNC bouncer. I just use it when websites no longer load due to the javascript being too much. While it's good for books and I tested that before on a different client I find that one Russian library, the geneis one, to be more convenient. I'll assume ZNC. Basically, one of the biggest weaknesses of IRC compared to something like, say, Slack is that the server is stateless. When you connect to a channel there is no way to see what conversation was happening a minute ago unless you ask someone. And you can just forget about searching some sort of archive to see if a topic has come up before, unless that channel happens to have public logs somewhere. You can only see what's happening on IRC *while you're connected* to IRC. A "bouncer" solves this for you by just keeping a connection to IRC constantly running on your behalf. Instead of connecting to IRC directly, you connect through your bouncer, like a proxy, and it passes messages back and forth. When you attach to the bouncer and join a channel (that your bouncer was already joined to), you can ask your bouncer for the "backlog" of the last few lines and it can give it to you because it's been connected the whole time. Same story if somebody DMed you while you were away. The most popular bouncer is ZNC: https://wiki.znc.in/ZNC. And Weechat has particularly nice integration with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- diwie · 2020-03-06 23:45 irssi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- onebts · 2020-03-07 21:36 Mirc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theor · 2020-03-11 17:55 Slow response ... Glowing Bear is a little website that connects to your WeeChat through WeeChats irc proxy feature / relay (see /help relay in WeeChat). It uses JavaScript to open a websocket to your WeeChat, so no data should be actually sent back through whatever site is hosting the webpage. So it should be safe to just use [https://www.glowing- bear.org/](https://www.glowing-bear.org/) directly. You can find the source code at [https://github.com/glowing- bear/glowing-bear](https://github.com/glowing-bear/glowing-bear) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kinduff · 2020-03-15 20:00 The Lounge ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stamour547 · 2020-03-17 12:21 Recently I have been using BitchX and like it (I'm not a power user by any means though). I am trying IRSSI though now at home because I'm working on switching linux distros and IRSSI is a lot easier to get running in my short experience. After I get my servers built out on the different distro then I might go back and fire up a VM to see about getting BitchX working. Just my 2 cents though
