Why Hex Chat is asking for money to windows user? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- callmebhawesh · 2020-02-23 13:26 As we all know that hex chat is open source and linux user can easily download and install this software to their system but windows user have to pay 7 or something dollar. Why is so? Is their any way to download hex chat in windows 10 for free like we do in linux ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trekkie1701c · 2020-02-23 14:12 https://hexchat.github.io/downloads.html Or just use the trial in the store. The price is a kind of clunky way to support the dev (sort of a donation) but afaik the trial is fully functional and I know the manual installer is fully functional, as that's how I use it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scrutinizer80 · 2020-02-23 15:27 Don't use the Win10 App.... Use the 64bit installer version. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- evilgold · 2020-02-24 00:13 Probably because the people making it work on windows realize that windows users are lazy and think paying for software is a normal thing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dilapidated-soul · 2020-02-24 02:48 Use AdiIRC instead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pedz · 2020-02-24 10:39 It requires extra work. I have multiple architectures at home and I use debauchee/barrier as a virtual KVM. It's open source and there are no versions for Windows 32 bit. There are also no packages for the armhf architecture. So I compiled it on Linux armhf without any issues. Works like a charm. Then I tried to compile it on Windows. It required the installation of .NET and gigabytes upon gigabytes of additional software. Open an account there, install Bonjour and what not. In the end, it wasn't worth it and I gave up. I can imagine someone developing an application for Linux not wanting to spend time trying to get it to work on Windows. After trying to compile myself on Windows, I can certainly understand why some may want compensation for that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FullScale4Me · 2020-03-18 04:24 Upvoted as someone who's built a whole box and did similar to the above for little personal gain. TL;RD for OP: air is free, time isn't. That may seem harsh until you've done the above SEVERAL times .
