EFNet is HARSH now.... reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rusti_gotrage · 2020-02-10 04:25 So playing with IRC for the first time in ages, connect to EFNet and do a #CHANNELS list... See a channel called #hackers - 179 users in it - and think... sure - why not... see what they're all chatting about. More out of curiosity than anything. Next thing I know: >\#hackers Illegal channel name You are banned from connecting to this server ("You are banned from this server- Temporary K-line 4320 min. - Trying to join juped channel #hackers (2020/2/10 04.17)") And I'm like ......wow...... harsh much??!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- clon3man · 2020-02-10 04:35 EFNet does not have a consistent set of rules across each server that shares the load of users, so when 1 server doesn't like something they "jupe" the channel, which prevents the channel from growing because their joiners risk getting disconnected from irc. The solution is not to use an efnet server that has excessive "juping" which is something you figure out through experience. It's more of a legacy network at this point, and although fairly stable, there is no expectation that things will work as designed when you get into the nitty gritty. At this point what keeps people in it, is addiction rather than the quality of the experience. Then again, most internet places also have problems, so there's advantages and disadvantages. I find people on freenode can be arrogant and petty. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rusti_gotrage · 2020-02-10 05:19 Awesome answer - Ta! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonno_FTW · 2020-02-10 05:59 Alternative: don't use efnet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mansyn · 2020-02-10 14:43 Are there some networks that are worth checking out these days, that actually have activity? Freenode just seems like it's for work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- earthrock3r · 2020-02-10 19:42 Feel free to check out irc.robothive.org. We are nowhere the size of freenode or efnet but are growing and there are active channels. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-02-10 23:17 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- l0de · 2020-02-11 00:02 Hell yeah. There's a weekly news broadcast about just how amazing EFnet is, check out EFnet news on youtube. I know this post is 2 years old and to be honest I haven't used EFNET in ages but I've noticed a trend where the new internet is low quality content and designed to be addictive (Reddit included, the custom feed is replaced by an army of karma harvesters doing the work for free!) While the ruins of the old internet, where still actually in use, has extremely high quality because everyone wants to be there. If they wanted to be a prick they'd have a lot more fun on Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grid_parity · 2023-03-29 01:51 smartphones have made everyone mean.
