IRCv3: Replies and responses reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- justjanne · 2020-02-07 15:25 Why is this important? In the future, this (combined with echo-message) will allow us to have functionality like ensuring delivery of messages (and providing sent/delivered status like WhatsApp does with its checkmarks), which also allows automatically resending messages which didn't get sent during connection loss. It also makes it easy to associate server responses with certain queries, to allow bouncers to e.g. route the reply to a /whois back to the right client. There's a lot of new functionality coming, and this is just the start of it :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- buovjaga · 2020-02-07 19:06 Godspeed you wonderful spec writers! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- acidhax · 2020-02-07 19:45 Is it also adding support for conversation threading? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- justjanne · 2020-02-07 20:28 That's a draft we've been working on for a while, and while this new spec is one step towards threading, we're not there yet. If you do want to try out threading, IRCCloud supports it already and is using it in multiple places, e.g. in their Slack bridge. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- justjanne · 2020-02-07 20:29 I'm not involved in this spec (I'm involved in the setname spec, though) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rro99 · 2020-02-08 12:27 Awesome. The ack response to messages will be awesome. Looking forward to adding this to my client ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rro99 · 2020-02-08 12:29 Out of curiosity. How did you get involved? I'm the author of an irc client and would love to somehow be part of the ircv3 spec ---------------------------------------------------------------------- justjanne · 2020-02-08 16:41 Start commenting on specs on the ircv3/ircv3-specifications and ircv3/ircv3-ideas repos on GitHub, and join the channel for those who want to contribute to specs, #ircv3 on Freenode. And just listen, read, and start commenting, bringing in great ideas, and in the end proposing actual specs :)
