For Linux, mostly freenode (lots of Free software channels there) and
OFTC (for Debian). On freenode you can type in many software names
preceded with a `#` (for official channels) or `##` (for unofficial
ones), and you'll find a channel dedicated to that software.

eg. `#ubuntu` (the largest channel on freenode, `##linux`, ...

freenode also has the `##english` to talk about the language.

Not sure about multimedia and football, I never looked into these
communities; but you can try channels with those names on big
generalist networks (snoonet, undernet, quakenet, ...)

Unfortunately `#causalconversation` was banned.  Snoonet hates the
arrow of time.

Yeah, I used to use reddit IRC to chat every night but I lost it.
Maybe you two are in on some inside joke? Did the server change or the
channel?

Bit late in reply but you could try Freenode.  Plenty of linu related
channels there including ##linux.
