do i need a vpn to chat on efnet? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xxsporkalert · 2020-01-23 03:54 just wondering if i need a vpn to chat on efnet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-01-23 06:02 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-01-23 06:12 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 007ace · 2020-01-23 06:13 No, you should not need a VPN. But I dont know where you are (country) the rules you have to follow, or your ISP policy. For me personally, in Canada, I've never needed a VPN to use IRC, wether it's efnet, rizon, or undernet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- earthrock3r · 2020-01-23 08:37 You do not have to have a vpn. However efnet does not mask your ip like some servers do. I would recommend not exposing your ip and using a vpn ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-01-23 08:43 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PetrichorMemories · 2020-01-23 09:41 Why? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2020-01-23 19:27 At this point, I just recommend having a VPN, even if you don't use it all the time. IRC was invented in a different era, with now archaic ideas about privacy. Over the years, IRC has evolved partially to address some of these issues with cloaks and the like, but EFnet in particular ("Eris Free Network," Eris being the goddess of discord) is one of the more anarchic out there. Your IP address there can be viewed by anyone else connected to EFnet. I don't know whether people routinely harvest these IP addresses to attempt to do damage or not, but given the cost of VPNs, it's not a risk I'm willing to take. You don't need one. You probably should get one. You'll probably find other uses for your VPN besides IRC. Just my personal opinion. I have too many other things I want to do than deal with some shithead DOSing me because he didn't like my opinion on something. There is almost no accountability on the Internet, nor has there ever been. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OMGItsCheezWTF · 2020-01-23 20:39 EFNet was actually formed after a group of servers of the original IRC network delinked off to form their own network because the original IRC network wouldn't delink a server called Eris, hence the name Eris Free Network. The users of that server were causing all sorts of havoc. So while it's still the wild west, being the second IRC network ever, it's actually the more sane of the two original networks. IRCnet being the supposedly more chaotic allowing Eris to stay connected. I have no idea if Eris still exists in any form. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2020-01-23 22:30 Ah so exactly backward, "Free of the nuisance Eris." I haven't been on IRCnet for years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- estimatedpr0fit · 2020-04-10 11:32 give this man an upvote!
