How did you guys originally find out about IRC? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fill3r · 2020-01-02 20:49 [https://www.ticalc.org/community/irc/](https://www.ticalc.org/communi ty/irc/) back in the mid 90s, I believe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Machinehum · 2020-01-02 21:05 I installed weechat, issued the command and the rest was history ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hemingray · 2020-01-02 21:32 From a site about a dude who prank called AOL customer service back in the late 90s ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unixbeard · 2020-01-02 21:41 My cousin showed me it during Christmas of 1998 and I was blown away. He emailed me links to download a client and I couldn't wait to get home and try it out - been on it pretty much every day since and still talk to friends I made when I first got on there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EuAndreh · 2020-01-02 22:01 Programming language and other software projects chat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sandrakarr · 2020-01-02 22:27 I'm not 100% sure (maybe...60?), but i think i picked it up from an MMPORG I used to play. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2020-01-02 22:48 hey, I also found out about IRC via the TI community! (not that website, though) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- not_perfect_yet · 2020-01-02 23:05 Some open source software mentioned there was a support channel there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MrFiregem · 2020-01-02 23:52 A subreddit community used it to chat, though I may have used it earlier. Now I mostly use it for the ebook communities ---------------------------------------------------------------------- h11rx · 2020-01-03 00:29 I like this! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-01-03 01:28 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2020-01-03 01:51 A lot of them back in the day ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YaYPIXXO · 2020-01-03 02:01 iOS jailbreaking ---------------------------------------------------------------------- onebts · 2020-01-03 02:15 1994... heard about it from a guy in my boy scout troop.. "Yahoo'ed" it and found mirc. Downloaded mirc and proceeded to try to connect to dalnet for an hour. Solution to the overburdened networks of the time my ass!!! And it always disconnected. All..the..time! Enjoyed chatting in #teens back then. Lots of cool nerds there. Wonder what happened to all of those people. Loved my eggdrop script! No wonder all the netsplits.... and whatever happened to caris.dal net ? It was still redirecting as of ten years ago, and then suddenly stopped working. Caris was always the most reliable for me, so as time went on I just /connect caris.dal.net those were the days!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- copper42 · 2020-01-03 05:20 my college roommate showed it to me after Napster got shut down. We were on undernet, used mirc. I can't get back on right now for some reason, but used it at least once per month since then for music books or chatting ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xechorizo · 2020-01-03 05:33 TalkCity in 1995. It only allowed a very specific version of pIRCh... Officially :) Moderated many rooms in my youth, dated a girl I met (yes, we physically met IRL; insert disbelief here), and still regularly talk to a very good friend I'd met there. Before MySpace, ICQ, MSN, FB, IG, Reddit and Discord, there was IRC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joelifer · 2020-01-03 09:28 ‘94 my uncle and Dad were both really getting into computers and the internet and they lived across the country so this was a great way for me to talk to them. I was on EFnet with them every day after school. That turned into going on Undernet during the mp3 boom and running eggdrops (I can’t believe they still use these!) which just blew me away and really got me into coding. From there sim sports leagues there and back on EFnet where I met some great people and not so great people lol. My old man is going to be 70 this year and is still on IRC. I’ve been on and off but getting back into recently after learning about ZNC. Man if I had that bouncer 20-25 years ago how cool would that have been? I have both my Dad and Uncle to thank for getting me on IRC and IRC itself for really building an interest in computers and coding in me which led me to do IT work now for a living. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beaffe · 2020-01-03 10:01 ‘97...everybody in school was talking about it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bigfondue · 2020-01-03 10:16 Hacker lore basically. I am young enough that pretty much only technical people used IRC when I was growing up. AIM and ICQ and others were the main way most non-techies communicated online then. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- justjanne · 2020-01-03 11:26 2013, a fanfiction community of a disney movie actually set up an IRC channel on Quakenet... A few years later, I ended up contributing to some major IRC clients, and made lots of friends over IRC :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MrKuroko · 2020-01-03 11:30 Archiveteam ---------------------------------------------------------------------- webvictim · 2020-01-03 12:49 I think I first discovered IRC via a community for the old torrent site SuprNova, but I didn’t stick around using it after a few days. I started a new job after graduating in 2006 and some staff at the company played an online game and had an IRC channel for chat. They got me to sign up and I’ve been online ever since. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the1iplay · 2020-01-03 13:52 In 1998 a friend said he got lots of dates from a chat software called MIRC. I couldn’t care less about the protocol. I was chatting 24/7 on MIRC undernet and had gotten lots of dates as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seiyria · 2020-01-03 14:39 Me too! What one did you play? I played kingdom of drakkar. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sandrakarr · 2020-01-03 17:25 Gothador mostly, and then one other one the developer made for awhile. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- r0b0b0x · 2020-01-03 22:33 I just found out about it at one point and started using it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Imaginary-Owl · 2020-01-04 15:57 I stumbled into online roleplaying via e-mail, ICQ, and AIM. One of my friends linked me to a cool game that was run on IRC. After playing a bit through an awful web client, I finally downloaded mIRC. This was around 2001. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BluFudge · 2020-01-07 16:58 I'm into open source, and to get help quick I had to use IRC. I was blown away! I thought it was a lot cooler than Instant Messaging. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2020-01-10 13:08 University in '94. Those days there was hardly anything going on on the new WordWideWeb, so all the action was on IRC, Usenet, gopher servers, FTP and email. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lujova · 2020-01-15 23:00 I was like 13 yrs old when I entered a chat in a famous website at that time, I got enchanted by the colours and the ascii figures you can create, few months later started using mIRC followed by IRCap and others after... I even became an IRCOp of a big server at that time. Those where the years lol. I still use mIRC to download music only. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IBNash · 2020-01-29 23:23 Friends in Kuwait during the invasion.
