I want to selfhost an IRC program on my server. What should I use? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ken_Mcnutt · 2019-12-29 20:33 Currently I use Weechat to connect to my favorite IRC servers. I have it installed on my laptop and desktop, so if I leave it logged in at home I can't use the same nick from my laptop. I learned I need to set up a bouncer to remain connected for me at all times and then connect to that from my personal devices. What is the best solution for this? I have been trying for a few weeks to get Traefik to reverse proxy ZNC, but I haven't got that working yet. I have also heard good things about TheLounge. BitlBee might be nice to set up so I can communicate with other protocols if needed. Does it handle bouncing as well? I really would prefer to keep using the Weechat client on my computers, and hopefully there is an IRC mobile app (1st party or otherwise) that can connect to it as well. I already have a hefty docker stack going so something I can just spin up in docker would be great. What do you all use? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stillfun · 2019-12-29 21:59 There is [Weechat-android](https://github.com/ubergeek42/weechat- android) that connects to your Weechat instance. It works really well, has notifications etc. Use that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ken_Mcnutt · 2019-12-30 01:07 But how do I host weechat? I usually run it as a client not a server. How can I quickly spin it up as a server in docker? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- peppelakappa · 2019-12-30 09:07 I don't think there's a simple way to host it via docker without creating a custom Dockerfile. [Here](https://github.com/ubergeek42/weechat-android/wiki/Quickstart- Guide) you can find a quick guide to set up a relay, make sure to setup TLS termination with letsencrypt before going public! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ISpewVitriol · 2019-12-30 12:34 ZNC worked for me and should solve your problem just fine. Setup ZNC to connect to all your irc servers with your nickname, and then connect your weechat and mobile instances to ZNC. When setup correctly everything should stay insync and you should be able to get push notifications to work, but it usually takes a client specific plugin to ZNC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ken_Mcnutt · 2019-12-30 15:55 Thanks for the tips. I kind of rely on docker for reverse proxying and SSL/TLS so I would definitely need that. I might check out ZNC docker image ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arnauldb · 2020-01-05 23:23 You can easily install weechat as a relay on a server. I did this on my Pi running my server. Easy and fast. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-01-09 12:50 [deleted]
