Charybdis vs ircd-seven reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- relgies · 2019-12-26 02:05 Hello, I was curious if anyone has any thoughts on Charybdis vs ircd-seven. I know that ircd-seven is a fork of Charybdis by freenode but I'm curious what the actual differences between the two are. What does ircd-seven change within Charybdis to make it more or less appealing? Also, is Charybdis even still supported that much? There was a commit on the Charybdis Github that said that "no really, it's dead people" and pointed to ircd-seven for the continued project, however it was reverted and someone seems to still be maintaining it to at least some degree but I'm curious how official that is / how long that will last. Any input or suggestions is appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-12-26 06:09 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2019-12-26 06:13 charybdis is a live and kicking. That commit was a bit overly dramatic. ircd-seven has a bunch of stuff specific for freenode's needs. Off the top of my head... * umode O - "mini-oper" / "helper". * oper:staffer is needed? (I forget) for umode o (normal full oper) ircd-seven has a lot of freenode specific stuff, but a lot of it has been ported into charybdis 4.x: https://github.com/charybdis-ircd/charybdis/blob/release/4/NEWS.md tl;dr, don't run ircd-seven unless you are freenode. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-12-26 12:49 You can ignore that commit, it got kaniini'd and then reverted later. You probably want to use Charybdis over ircd-seven because the latter is only really intended for use by freenode. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- relgies · 2019-12-26 15:28 Thanks for the reply / specific information. I figured that it might be the case that freenode had stuff specific to them but I wasn't sure if it had gotten to the point where the bulk of developement on Chaarybdis was taken over by freenode and they mostly maintained it. I had noticed someone was doing some updates to Charybdis but I wasn't sure if it was just a single guy trying to put in some effort or what the situation really was. Thanks again for the information! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- relgies · 2019-12-26 15:31 I'm not exactly sure what kaniini'd means (>.<) but it seems like it was just a mistake or troll of some sort. That seems to be the consensus. It was what I had originally though but upon seeing that commit which got reverted along with knowing that Atheme uses freenode and how much work they do on their Charybdis fork I wasn't sure if it would be an all-around more feature rich and stable/actively updated version or not. Thanks for letting me letting know that it's best to just use default Charybdis though.
